“15 million reasons to stay”: Tom Brady might delay his retirement for just a week for this special reason

Tom Brady

Tom Brady’s retirement stirred up a lot of confusion. ESPN on Saturday reported that the legendary quarterback has decided to retire from the NFL.

However, this wasn’t the case. The 44-year old quarterback hasn’t released any official statement regarding his retirement. If Brady does decide to hang up his jersey, there are millions of reasons why the Buccaneers QB should postpone his announcement for at least a week.

Tom Brady’s signing bonus with the Buccaneers will be activated on Friday, February 4

Tom Brady spent 19 years of his career with the New England Partiots where he helped create the Patriots Dynasty. After 6 Super Bowl victories with New England, Brady decided to part ways with them after the 2019 season. He then signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on March 20, 2020. The two-year contract was worth $50 million in fully guaranteed money, with up to $4.5 million each year in incentives. The deal also included a no-trade and a no-franchise tag clause.

According to Spotrac, $15 million of Brady’s $20 million signing bonus was deferred to Feb. 4, 2022. If Brady retires before Friday, February 4, he will give up the bonus money. If Brady decides to continue to the 2022 season, Spotrac notes his entire salary would be guaranteed but voided if he decides to retire.

Tom Brady’s official retirement to be announced soon

Brady previously mentioned that he wants the timing of his retirement to be perfect. Such that it doesn’t steal the spotlight from the Super Bowl and also gives the Buccaneers enough time to evaluate their strategies before the free agency. Tampa Bay will have the 27th pick in the 2022 draft. Also tight end Rob Gronkowski has hinted that he too might retire if ‘forced’ to give a decision right away.

“I understand the advance speculation about Tom’s future. Without getting into the accuracy or inaccuracy of what’s being reported, Tom will be the only person to express his plans with complete accuracy,” Brady’s agent Don Yee said in the statement after Saturday’s fiasco. “He knows the realities of the football business and planning calendar as well as anybody, so that should be soon.”

So, if Brady has decided that this is the end of the road for his Hall of Fame career, he might want to announce his retirement after Friday so that he might get that $15 million bonus. Reports suggest Tom Brady will officially announce his retirement shortly in the coming days.
