“It will be a lot closer than expected”: Bill Cowher is backing Steelers to thrash the Chiefs

Bill Cowher

William Laird Cowher is a name to reckon with in the world of the NFL. He served as a coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers for as many as 15 seasons before ending his stint as a coach after the 2006 season. It goes without saying, he has a special connection and a lot of faith in the Steelers.

The Steelers, this season, have been quite lucky. They have made their way into the playoffs after a few results, unexpectedly, went their way. They are all set to face the mighty Chiefs in the Wildcard Round and many experts are claiming that the Steelers have got no chance of going past them.

However, Bill Cowher has a different take on the issue. He loves to prove everyone wrong, something which he has done on several occasions in his illustrious career as well. Bill recently opined that the Steelers vs Chiefs game is going to be a lot closer than everyone is expecting.

You play a team a second time, there’s a little familiarity with that,” Cowher said. “I think the familiarity really benefits the team that loses. It slows down a little bit the more you play a team. That’s why you see all these close divisional games because they know each other so well. Playing a team for a second time is like that divisional game.”

I expect this game to be a lot closer,” he claimed, adding that if the Steelers can find a way to keep things close and take the game into the fourth quarter, then all of a sudden, the pressure will be on Kansas City. “Having one of the best field goal kickers in the league (Chris Boswell), one of the best fourth-quarter quarterbacks in the league, if the Steelers get this game to the fourth quarter, they may have a chance,” he added.

Talking about his coaching stint, Bill said, “Every game when I coached, I tried to make it personal. You want to go to something where you can challenge the players and make it personal. There’s nothing more, I would say, almost offensive as to be a double-digit underdog when you make the playoffs.”

The legendary coach added that the best and the most enjoyable part about the game is that he can have the opportunity to prove people wrong. “The fun part is being able to prove people wrong. To do something no one thinks you can do. There’s no greatest satisfaction in sports than doing something that no one thinks you can do,” he added.

The Steelers would be the underdogs coming into the game against the Chiefs. The Cheifs’ offense looks extremely well-poised and the Steelers would have to really play out of their skins to stop the team from Kansas.
