In NFL, the quarterback is considered to be the most important position on the gridiron. Now, this is true but only on the field. Off the field or on the sideline, the head coach’s job is the most important one.

Players may come and go but the head coach is someone who remains with the team for a lot longer. A head coach’s job entails creating the playbook for the season on both offense and defense. Coordinating with the entire coaching staff and identifying which player needs extra attention and can become an asset on the field.

Head coaches are just as much responsible for winning the Super Bowl as any other player. To become a head coach in the NFL is a great honor and not everyone can sustain themselves in the extremely competitive atmosphere.

In the offseason, many teams went through changes and fired their head coaches because they couldn’t deliver the desired result. Let’s take a look at the head coaches for all 32 teams in the league for the upcoming season.

After a 4-13 record in the 2022 season, the Arizona Cardinals had to fire Kliff Kingsbury. He is replaced by Johnathan Gannon, who served as the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles and reached Super Bowl LVII but lost to the mighty Kansas City Chiefs.

Two days after the Super Bowl loss, Johnathan Gannon was hired as the new head coach of the Cardinals. Gannon has signed a five-year contract with the Cards. He had great success with the Eagles in the 2022 season as the defense was ranked top 3 in the regular season. The Cardinals were in desperate need of a stalwart guy as the head coach and looks like they found their guy in Jonathan Gannon. This will be his first gig as a head coach in the NFL.

Arthur Smith – Atlanta Falcons

Arthur Smith - Atlanta Falcons

Arthur Smith was hired as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons in 2021. He began his coaching career in the NFL back in 2007 with the Washington Commanders. Smith was a part of the Titans from 2011-2020.

Arthur Smith served various roles on the Titans team, on both offense and defense, giving him a well-rounded knowledge of both sides of the scrimmage line. However, he hasn’t made much success as the head coach of the Falcons.

In the two years Smith has been the captain of the ship, he has led them to 7-10 seasons in 2021 and 2022. The Falcons didn’t qualify for the playoffs in both seasons. For the 2023 season, Smith will be under pressure to deliver a playoff berth or things might turn upside down for him pretty fast in this cutthroat league where all that matters is winning the Super Bowl.

John Harbaugh – Baltimore Ravens

John Harbaugh has been the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens since 2008 and has done a great job of leading the franchise. During his tenure in Baltimore, Harbaugh has taken the Ravens to four AFC North division titles, and three AFC Championship games.

The 60-year-old also guided the Ravens to victory in Super Bowl XLVII, also dubbed as The Harbaugh Bowl as John faced his brother Jim and the 49ers. John Harbaugh also won the AP Coach of the Year in 2019, leading the team to a franchise-best 14-2 record. He has a 147-95 record as head coach of the Ravens.

Sean McDermott – Buffalo Bills

Sean McDermott took over as the head coach of the Buffalo Bills in 2017. McDermott hit the ground running in his first season as he led the Bills to their first playoff appearance since 1999, ending the playoff drought in all four major leagues in the United States.

McDermott has had great success in the regular season during his tenure in Buffalo with a 62-35 record. However, in the postseason, the Bills have been extremely unlucky. The 49-year-old has a 4-5 record in the playoffs which is an issue for the Bills. They entered the 2022 season as the Super Bowl favorite but fell short in the AFC divisional playoffs against the Bengals. Sean McDermott will again look to lead the franchise to their first Super Bowl victory in 2023.

Frank Reich – Carolina Panthers

Frank Reich was the first quarterback of the Carolina Panthers and life came full circle for him as he was announced as the new head coach of the team in January 2023. Reich served as the head coach for the Colts from 2018 until his midseason firing in 2022.

Recih had a 40-33-1 record as head coach of the Colts. He will look to make the Panthers a powerhouse in the NFC as the team has the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft. Frank Reich has a tough road ahead of him as he will have to train a rookie quarterback to lead a franchise in a very short amount of time.

Matt Eberflus – Chicago Bears

Matt Eberflus started his NFL coaching career as a linebackers coach for the Brown in 2009. He then served on the Cowboys staff for eight years from 2011-2017. He then went on to be the defensive coordinator for the Colts.

The Chicago Bears hired him as their new head coach in 2022. Eberflus had the worst start to his head coaching career as the Bears went 3-14 earning the first overall pick (later traded the pick to the Panthers). Eberflus has his work cut out for him for the 2023 season. Another losing season might put an end to his head coach journey in the NFL.

Zac Taylor – Cincinnati Bengals

Zac Taylor had one of the toughest gigs in the league when he signed on to be the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals in 2019. His first two seasons were as everyone expected of the Bengals – the worst. Cincinnati was at the bottom of the pool until the 2021 season.

In 2021, Zac Taylor had a great season as he guided the team to the Super Bowl. The Rams defeated them and took home the Lombardi Trophy. In 2022, Taylor led another great season as the Bengals had a 10-game winning streak and advanced to the AFC Championship game. The Bengals were defeated by the Chiefs thus putting a stop to their back-to-back Super Bowl appearance.

The Bengals franchise has turned itself around ever since Zac Taylor and Joe Burrow started associated with the team. They are now a Super Bowl contender every year.

Stefanski won the 2020 AP NFL Coach of the Year and Sporting News Coach of the Year for his exceptional performance. However, since then he has had two losing seasons. With Deshaun Watson being a full-time starter in the 2023 season, Kevin Stefanski can hope for a comeback year and make it to the Super Bowl.

Mike McCarthy was brought in to be the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys because he had a Super Bowl trophy on his resume. McCarthy started as the head coach for the Cowboys in 2020.

After a bad start to his stint in Dallas, Mike McCarthy bounced back and delivered back-to-back 12-win seasons. However, he is yet to lead the franchise to the NFC Championship game. The 59-year-old is said to be on the hot seat for the 2023 season as he has to deliver a Super Bowl, something the franchise and owner Jerry Jones have been waiting for since 1995.

Sean Payton will return as a head coach after taking a year-long hiatus. The Denver Broncos announced earlier in 2023 that Payton will take over as the new head coach of the team.

LaFleur also guided the Packers to back-to-back NFC Championship appearances but lost both matchups. In the 2022 season, the Packers had an 8-9 season with no playoff appearance. Matt Fleur now has a new quarterback in Jordan Love for the 2023 season. The 43-year-old will be tested to see if he can be the No.1 seed in the NFC without an MVP quarterback under center.

Ryans served as the defensive coordinator for the 49ers and to back-to-back conference championship games. The 49ers’ defense was one of the most feared ones in the NFC during his two years stint. Now, Ryans will look to make the Texans a formidable team from here in out.

The Eagles who made it to Super Bowl LVII lost their offensive coordinator Shane Steichen to the Colts. Steichen signed a six-year contract to be the new head coach of the Indianapolis Colts.
