The team was founded in 1932 as the Boston Braves and changed its name to the Boston Redskins the following year. The franchise moved to Washington, D.C., in 1937 and became the Washington Redskins. The team won the 1937 and 1942 NFL Championship games and Super Bowls XVII, XXII, and XXVI.
Washington’s name change was inevitable despite owner Dan Snyder’s declaration that the name would never change. The Washington fanbase felt as if they were losing a part of their childhood, their history, their community. So, the fans were asked for name submissions. The process led to abundant support for names like Warriors and Redwolves. These names were however shot down by Team President Jason Wright for different reasons.
NFL fans all around the globe ridiculed Washington’s new name and think ‘Commanders’ is a silly name for the team.
