The NFL is undoubtedly one of the biggest sporting leagues in the world. It provides a platform for many football enthusiasts to live their dream. The games have a global appeal and many aspire to be a part of them. However, from time to time, the league also gets involved in a number of controversies.
This time around, the NFL and the owners of several franchises have been accused of racial discrimination. Former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores recently filed a lawsuit against the NFL and several franchises. According to the lawsuit, Flores has stated that even after the “Rooney Rule” came into being, racial discrimination has not disappeared from the NFL’s hiring process.
“There is an egregious lack of representation of Black leaders in NFL”: Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman
Taking about why he went on to file the lawsuit, Brian recently told ABC Nightline, “I’ve heard from a lot of players. I appreciate their support. I’m doing this for them and their children, because a lot of them are Black players and they see there’s a need for change”.
In the explosive lawsuit that has shaken up the entire world, Flores said that during the 2019 season owner Stephen Ross wanted to pay a hefty amount, $100,000 to be precise, for every defeat so the side could have a better draft pick. Flores stated that he refused all such offers.
Addressing the lawsuit, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz made some strong points. “There is an egregious lack of representation and opportunity for Black leaders in the NFL,” she said. “The NFL has a sexism and a race problem, that it refuses to seriously address. Colin Kaepernick, Jon Gruden, now Brian Flores. The names change but the problem remains,” she further stated.
