The 2023 NFL campaign has been nothing short of a dream for the 24-year-old who now stands just one game away from the Vince Lombardi trophy. But has any Mr. Irrelevant won the Super Bowl before?

Purdy was selected as the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, earning the moniker Mr. Irrelevant. The particular term refers to the last draft pick of every NFL Draft class. More often than not, certain Mr. Irrelevants in the NFL have successfully excelled for their respective teams but Brock Purdy’s impact on the San Francisco 49ers has been more than impressive.

In just his second season in the NFL, Purdy has led the Niners to the Super Bowl game, a title they last won at Super Bowl XXIX back in the 90s. To date, there has been three occasions a Mr. Irrelevant featured in a Super Bowl game. It was, in fact, Marty Moore who recorded the first ever Super Bowl appearance for the last pick of an NFL Draft in Super Bowl XXXI while playing for the Patriots.

However, they lost 35–21 to the Green Bay Packers and Moore left without a ring on the occasion.

He would return for another Super Bowl appearance with the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVI where they beat the St. Louis Rams to win their first Lombardi trophy in franchise history. It was also the first instance in league history that a Mr. Irrelevant won the Super Bowl.

The third Super Bowl appearance by a Mr. Irrelevant came at Super Bowl LV when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers faced the Kansas City Chiefs. Bucs placekicker Ryan Succop became the first ever Mr. Irrelevant to start a Super Bowl game.

The irony of the situation was that the Chiefs were, in fact, the team who had chosen Succop as the last pick of the 2009 NFL Draft. The Bucs eventually won the game with a 31–9 score. It marked the second occasion that a Mr. Irrelevant won the Super Bowl. Coincidentally enough, on both occasions, a certain Tom Brady was part of the winning roster.
