The San Francisco 49ers and Brock Purdy will be gearing up to take on the Kansas City Chiefs tonight at Super Bowl LVIII. The 2023 NFL campaign has been nothing short of a dream for the 24-year-old who now stands just one game away from the Vince Lombardi trophy. But has any Mr. Irrelevant won the Super Bowl before?
Purdy was selected as the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, earning the moniker Mr. Irrelevant. The particular term refers to the last draft pick of every NFL Draft class. More often than not, certain Mr. Irrelevants in the NFL have successfully excelled for their respective teams but Brock Purdy’s impact on the San Francisco 49ers has been more than impressive.
In just his second season in the NFL, Purdy has led the Niners to the Super Bowl game, a title they last won at Super Bowl XXIX back in the 90s. If Brock Purdy takes home the Lombardi trophy tonight, he will join the ranks of only a handful of Mr. Irrelevants who have managed to win the Super Bowl.
How many Mr. Irrelevants have won the Super Bowl?
Former New England Patriots linebacker Marty Moore and Tampa Bay Buccaneers placekicker Ryan Succop are the only two Mr. Irrelevants to have won a Super Bowl in NFL history.
To date, there has been three occasions a Mr. Irrelevant featured in a Super Bowl game. It was, in fact, Marty Moore who recorded the first ever Super Bowl appearance for the last pick of an NFL Draft in Super Bowl XXXI while playing for the Patriots.
However, they lost 35–21 to the Green Bay Packers and Moore left without a ring on the occasion.
He would return for another Super Bowl appearance with the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVI where they beat the St. Louis Rams to win their first Lombardi trophy in franchise history. It was also the first instance in league history that a Mr. Irrelevant won the Super Bowl.
The third Super Bowl appearance by a Mr. Irrelevant came at Super Bowl LV when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers faced the Kansas City Chiefs. Bucs placekicker Ryan Succop became the first ever Mr. Irrelevant to start a Super Bowl game.
The irony of the situation was that the Chiefs were, in fact, the team who had chosen Succop as the last pick of the 2009 NFL Draft. The Bucs eventually won the game with a 31–9 score. It marked the second occasion that a Mr. Irrelevant won the Super Bowl. Coincidentally enough, on both occasions, a certain Tom Brady was part of the winning roster.
Is Brock Purdy the first Mr. Irrelevant QB to play a Super Bowl?
Yes, Brock Purdy is indeed the first ever quarterback chosen as a last draft pick to appear in a Super Bowl game. Super Bowl LVIII will mark the fourth occasion a Mr. Irrelevant will be playing the biggest game of the year.
Purdy will also be the second Mr. Irrelevant in NFL history to start a Super Bowl game. If he manages to outplay Patrick Mahomes and Co. tonight, he will very well become the first ever Mr. Irrelevant quarterback to win a Super Bowl title.
Given his phenomenal performances throughout the season, if a Super Bowl MVP is in the cards for Purdy in tonight’s showdown, he will become the first and only Mr. Irrelevant to lay his hands upon the coveted award.
