The Green Bay Packers and their kicker, Mason Crosby have had an illustrious 15-year tenure together. Since being drafted by the Packers in 2007, Crosby has been the team’s only starting kicker and has built up a reputation as one of the best NFL kickers of all time.
In recent years, however, as he has begun to age, his ability seems to somewhat be waning as well. In 2021 he had one of his worst seasons of all time with a make percentage of just 73.5. In 2018 he also missed a lot of kicks making only 78.9% that year. In between these 2 poor seasons he had 2 very good ones which included a 100% season in 2020.
His inconsistency makes it difficult to judge what he’ll bring to the table in 2022. Of course, it’s great to remember what he did in 2020 but in sports, you’re only as good as you’re last season. Green Bay Packers GM, Brian Gutekunst made some comments about Mason Crosby which were rather odd considering his poor form as of late.

Brian Gutekunst recently told reporters “For where our football team is, having a championship kind of kicker, a guy who can compete at that level, is important.“
This is slightly confusing because of how Mason Crosby played last season. Of course, just by looking at the 2021 NFL playoffs, it’s crucial to have an elite kicker that can deliver in the clutch. Mason Crosby certainly has been that in the past but it’s unknown if he will provide like that from here on out.
On the other hand, bringing in free agents or rookie kickers for competition may also not be as reliable too. It could also help Crosby’s mental game as if he believes he has true competition for the spot, he may feel like he has to up his game. Only time will tell how this situation will pan out in Green Bay.
