“He’s out dueled Aaron Rodgers in Lambeau.” Colin Cowherd defends Jimmy Garoppolo amidst heavy criticism
Jimmy Garoppolo and Colin Cowherd
Jimmy Garoppolo has found himself in the headlines quite a bit this week as the 49ers prepare for their NFC Championship matchup against the LA Rams. While he’s had his doubters in the past, now more than ever he’s being looked at analytically and being criticized.
In this year’s playoffs, Garoppolo has put up less than 200 yards in both games and is yet to throw a touchdown. Now while his team has won both games, he hasn’t been at the center of their offense, driving them to the wins. Nor has he really done that in the past. That’s where most of the criticism he is receiving is coming from. Colin Cowherd, however, believes there’s more to Jimmy Garoppolo and it’s something that a stat sheet won’t tell you.
Colin Cowherd believes in Jimmy Garoppolo
Colin Cowherd did a segment on his show ‘The Herd’ where he was defending Jimmy Garoppolo saying, “Jimmy G makes people feel good. He’s a guy’s guy. Tom Brady has had 20 quarterbacks in his career backing him up. He only wanted one out of the building. Garoppolo made Tom Brady a little insecure.”
Cowherd further added “He doesn’t worry about the outside world. Aaron Rodgers is obsessed about it. Obsessed with how he’s being treated. Jimmy doesn’t care. Analytical people often forget about this. There’s a feel to football. It can’t just be about your arm and your talent. If so then Aaron Rodgers wouldn’t be 11-10 and he wouldn’t keep losing games at home as a favorite to inferior quarterbacks.”
To further emphasize his point, Cowherd compared Jimmy Garoppolo with some other quarterbacks in the league saying “Jimmy Garopplo makes you feel better in crisis. I’ve said this about Kirk Cousins. Kirk Cousins is a good quarterback but he shrinks. I feel like he shrinks all the time. Analytics can’t tell you about that. How are you in crisis, how do your teammates relate to you? I’ve said this about Jimmy G. Aaron’s more talented but you wouldn’t trust him in crisis and he wouldn’t trust you.”
To round out his argument Cowherd added “There’s gotta be something to this game besides wow he’s big and strong. There is a feel to it. And Jimmy is absolutely limited but I’ve seen him outduel Joe Burrow down the stretch and Matt Stafford in the second half and Kyler Murray in a big spot and Aaron Rodgers in Lambeau.”
When it comes to these ‘feel’ situations it’s definitely true that it exists because we see the best of the best separate themselves in the big moments and make the plays when it matters. Whether or not Jimmy Garoppolo is historically the best example for that is certainly debatable. What isn’t debatable however is that Jimmy Garoppolo is very likely to have a crisis moment in the NFC Championship game and he is going to have to step up and make the big-time play to take his team to the Super Bowl.
