“History will serve us well” – Jerry Jones on future together with Randy Gregory heading into free agency

Jerry Jones, Owner and General Manager of the Dallas Cowboys has been in Mobile, Alabama to check out draft prospects at the Senior Bowl at Hancock Whitney Stadium. Along with the draft prospect, Jones has also been keeping a close eye on the team’s free agents.

Among the free agents is defensive end, Randy Gregory. The pass rusher has been a controversial player for the Cowboys. However, Jones is confident that they can come to a decision that will be beneficial for both parties.

Randy Gregory was selected by the Cowboys in the second round of the 2015 draft. Gregory has been a valuable asset for Dallas but his behavior off the field has caused Dallas a lot of trouble. The 29-year old defensive end has never played an entire season with the Cowboys. He has missed several games due to multiple suspensions for substance violations.

Despite Gregory’s antics, the Cowboys have always held onto him and Jones said on Wednesday that he thinks that history will be a plus to the team’s bid to hold onto Gregory this offseason. “Knowing our time together and some of the pluses and some of the times that we’ve had to work through and some of the not-so-fun things, that will serve us well,” Jones said, via the team’s website.

Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl run ended in the first round of the playoffs itself. The Cowboys faced the 49ers in wild card weekend and were crushed by the Niners. While there was a lot of blame to go around, the majority of the heat for the Cowboys’ loss was received by Gregory.

After turning the ball over to the San Francisco 49ers inside of two minutes to play, the Cowboys had two timeouts and got a big stop on second down. But Gregory got flagged for defensive holding after he effectively wrestled a 49ers lineman to the ground. That flag gave the 49ers an automatic first down. And the 49ers were able to run down the clock to 32 seconds, making it near impossible for the Cowboys to come back.

Gregory had six sacks, 17 quarterback hits, three forced fumbles, and an interception in 12 games for the Cowboys this season. His future at Dallas will be soon revealed before the free agency market.
