Brock Purdy was a little-known college quarterback who had low expectations going into his NFL career less than two years ago. The young quarterback was selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the 262nd and final pick of the 2022 Draft. He was dubbed “Mr. Irrelevant,” a moniker given to the player selected last out of all the college talent joining the NFL.

However, in 2024, Purdy is poised to make history as he leads the 49ers into Sunday’s Super Bowl matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, the reigning champions, where “Mr. Irrelevant” has the opportunity to finalize his incredible metamorphosis into San Francisco’s “Mr. Right.”

A lot of things had to go right for Purdy to eventually end up in San Francisco. With the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers chose not to study Patrick Mahomes because they expected to sign Kirk Cousins in 2018 free agency and bring him back to coach Kyle Shanahan.

But when Jimmy Garoppolo was traded to the 49ers by the New England Patriots in October 2017, their plans were altered. Nevertheless, the 49ers traded up to select quarterback C.J. Beathard 104th overall in the third round of the draft. After Beathard left to play for the Jacksonville Jaguars, the 49ers were awarded a compensatory 7th-round pick in 2022, which they used to select Brock Purdy.

The second-year quarterback is now leading the Niners in the Super Bowl. He will become the first quarterback in NFL history to lead his team to a Super Bowl after being selected as the last pick of the draft. The Niners are currently leading the Kansas City Chiefs 10-0 in Super Bowl LVIII.

Kurt Warner believes that Brock Purdy has been the best QB in the league this season

Despite ongoing skepticism from many analysts, a growing contingent of NFL players and former players are voicing support for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. They believe in his abilities despite criticisms labeling him as a system quarterback surrounded by talented teammates or as someone who primarily relies on short passes to his weapons.

Kurt Warner, a Hall of Famer, has been defending Purdy for a few months. Warner is still perplexed by the actions of numerous people who keep spoiling Purdy’s fun. Purdy reminds Warner, who was the epitome of the underdog, a lot of himself and his own story.

I'm not sure there's a quarterback that's played better over the last year and a half than Brock Purdy--I understand what's set up for the quarterback and I understand the difficulty of different throws, and I know Brock Purdy is asked to make numerous difficult throws in this offense.
Warner told ESPN

He further continued,

His anticipation, his understanding of what they're trying to do and his ability to make different kinds of throws has been special.

It is true that Purdy has had a unique season. And now he has the opportunity to bring another Super Bowl victory to the Bay Area and make it an unforgettable season.
