The Pittsburgh Steelers have had a tryst with the Super Bowl. One of the oldest teams in the NFL, the Steelers, is one of the most successful franchises in the league’s history with 6 Super Bowl triumphs. Founded in the year 1933, they are the seventh-oldest franchise in the NFL and the oldest in the AFC.
The story of the Steelers has two contrasting chapters. The pre-merger Steelers were the oldest team ever to have won the championship. The post-merger Pittsburgh Steelers, however, are one of the most successful teams in the NFL.
They were first named the Pittsburgh Pirates in the early stages of their existence. They were owned by Art Rooney at that time and took the name from the city’s baseball team with the same name. The ownership of the Steelers has remained with the Rooney family till now.
The Steelers have a sizable and devoted fan base known as Steeler Nation. They play their home games at Acrisure Stadium, which is located in the North Shore neighborhood of Pittsburgh’s North Side. Three Rivers Stadium, the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers for thirty-one seasons, was demolished to make room for Heinz Field in 2001. The Steelers had previously used Forbes Field and Pitt Stadium as their home fields.
The Steelers have had a host of superstars throughout their NFL history. They have 21 players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which is the third-highest in the NFL. Superstars such as Franco Harris and Troy Polamalu have graced the field as Steelers and have enjoyed tremendous success.
Head coaches such as Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher are also inducted into the Hall of Fame. Although the Steelers haven’t enjoyed Super Bowl success in recent years, they have a storied history. Let’s take a look at the Steelers’ Super Bowl triumphs over the years.

How many Super Bowls do the Pittsburgh Steelers win?
The Pittsburgh Steelers have won six Super Bowls in their 90-year history. Their first Super Bowl victory came in the year 1974 and that kickstarted a dynasty in the 70s. Four of the Steelers’ six Super Bowls came in that decade. Then there was a lull, but the Steel City got its hand back on the Super Bowl in the mid-2000s. They have been to 8 Super Bowl and have a record of 6-2 in the ultimate game.
Super Bowl IX: The First One
The Steelers were a dynasty in the ’70s. They won their first of four Super Bowls that decade with a 16-6 win over the Minnesota Vikings. That Steelers team was built on great defense, as a lot of those early Pittsburgh teams were.
However, a certain Franco Harris stole the show in the Super Bowl. He ran for 158 yards, which was more than the entire Vikings’ offense, and scored a touchdown. He took home the Super Bowl MVP.

The Vikings were a great team as well, led by future Hall of Famer quarterback Fran Tarkenton. Their defense, known as the ‘Purple People Eaters’, was deadly. However, they stood no chance against a ferocious Steelers team that would win the Super Bowl and etch their name in NFL history forever.
Super Bowl X: Hollywood Endings in the ‘Burgh
The Steelers found themselves in the Super Bowl the very next year. This time, their opponents were the Dallas Cowboys. The game was played at the Miami Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida, on January 18, 1976.
The Steelers came into the game with the famous “Steel Curtain” defense and had a league-best 12-2 record during the regular season. The Cowboys, on the other hand, came into the game with a lot of offense and a record of 10-4.

Terry Bradshaw, the Steelers star QB, had a great game. He threw for 209 yards and two touchdowns. However, the star of the show was WR Lynn Swann, who caught four passes for a Super Bowl-record 161 yards and one touchdown. As a result of that dominating performance, the Steelers won the game 21-17 and Swann became the first receiver to win Super Bowl MVP.
Super Bowl XIII: A Tale of Two Quarterbacks
Fast forward three years and the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Dallas Cowboys found themselves playing the ultimate game once again. This was the first rematch in Super Bowl history. Just like in Super Bowl X, the Steelers came out on top in this one as well.
The Cowboys came into the game as the defending Super Bowl champions and a record of 12-4. The Steelers, though, had a better record that season than the Cowboys with 14-2.

Terry Bradshaw again had a fantastic game and won the Super Bowl MVP this time. He threw for 318 yards, 4 touchdowns and one interception. Cowboys’ QB Roger Staubach willed his team and kept the game close, but the Cowboys failed to win the game. Due to the stakes and the players involved, this Super Bowl is widely considered the best in NFL history.
Super Bowl XIV: Bradshaw’s Symphony
This was the Pittsburgh Steelers’ fourth Super Bowl triumph in the 70s. This time, the Los Angeles Rams were the opponents. They snuck into the playoffs with a 9-7 record. The Steelers, on the other hand, marched into the Super Bowl with a 12-4 record.
The Rams never stood a chance as Terry Bradshaw torched them with 309 yards and two touchdowns en route to winning another Super Bowl MVP.

It was a close game by halftime with the Rams leading, 13-10. In the second half, however, Bradshaw and the Steelers’ offense ran the show. John Stallworth finished with three receptions for 121 yards and one touchdown. The Steelers eventually won the game, 19-31.
Super Bowl XL: A Journey to the Championship
After a period of Super Bowl drought, the Steelers were back. They came into Super Bowl XL with a record of 11-5 and had to play the wild card round to advance further. They beat a Seattle Seahawks team that boasted a league-best record of 13-3.
The Steelers jumped to a 14-3 lead in the third quarter thanks to a Willie Parker Super Bowl record 75-yard touchdown run. QB Ben Roethlisberger had a poor game with 123 yards and two interceptions.

Wide receiver Hines Ward, though, was brilliant as he went off for 123 yards and one touchdown in five receptions, winning the Super Bowl MVP in the process. He also had an 18-yard rush during the game. The Seahawks were soundly beaten, 21-10 as the Steelers won their fifth Super Bowl.
Super Bowl XLIII: The Immaculate Extension
Oh what a game this was! The Pittsburgh Steelers played the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII. This game had some memorable plays that are still talked about today. James Harrison‘s legendary 100-yard pick 6 to end the first half is widely regarded as one of the greatest football plays of all time. That touchdown gave the Steelers a 10-point lead heading into halftime.

This was the Super Bowl, though, and the Arizona Cardinals were there for a reason. They were a great team. And they made it an exciting game as the Cardinals went on a run that saw them score 16 unanswered points to take the lead with 2:37 remaining in the game. The Steelers got the ball back and what followed was pure magic!
Big Ben orchestrated a drive that will go down as the greatest non-QB drive in NFL history. WR Santonio Holmes caught everything thrown his way, including the game-winning toe tap catch that will go down in history as the ‘Immaculate Reception.’ Holmes was aptly named the Super Bowl MVP for his 9 receptions, 131 yards, and a touchdown performance.
