The first game of week 17 will take place between the Cleveland Browns and the New York Jets on Thursday. Both these teams have had contrasting seasons so far. The Browns are 10-5 and are well poised to make it into the playoffs. The Jets, on the other hand, have endured a difficult season ever since Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles in week 1.
The Browns came into the 2023 season on the back of a difficult 2022 campaign. Although they moved on from Baker Mayfield and signed Deshaun Watson as their quarterback, the Browns only managed to win 7 games last season. Watson was suspended for the team’s first 11 games and was rusty when he came back.
However, this season has been different. The Browns, carried by an elite defense, has been one of the surprise teams of the season.
Contradictorily, the Jets had a lot of eyes on them, especially after they acquired superstar QB Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers in the offseason. However, Rodgers’ week 1 Achilles injury hampered the season before it even began. Backup QB Zach Wilson took the reins, but the Jets’ season never recovered after the former MVP’s injury. They are currently 6-9 and are out of the playoff race.
The Jets have won three of their last five matchups against the Browns. These two teams last played each other in September last year in Cleveland. The Jets secured a one point win in a high scoring thriller. QB Joe Flacco, who is at the helm for Browns this time around, had a brilliant game as he threw for 307 yards and 4 touchdowns. However, it’s the Browns who lead their overall head-to-head count, 15-14.

Why the Cleveland Browns can win?
The Cleveland Browns have been fantastic at home this season. They have won 7 of their 8 home games so far. The Browns have struggled at the quarterback position due to injuries, however, former Jet Joe Flacco has been brilliant since assuming the quarterbacking duties. He has had three consecutive games of at least 300 yards and two touchdowns in four starts.
With an incredible performance in Week 16, Amari Cooper broke the club record for most receiving yards in a game (265 on 11 catches). The 29-year-old wide receiver became the first player in team history to record consecutive seasons with 1,000 yards after turning in back-to-back 100-yard performances. With 173 yards before the half on Sunday, Cooper was just two yards short of Josh Gordon‘s club record for the most yards in a half of a game.
Why the New York Jets can win?
Even though New York was behind by 20 points at the half, they managed to overcome the Commanders thanks to a 54-yard field goal by Greg Zuerlein with five seconds left in the fourth quarter. The 35-year-old kicker is second in the NFL in terms of success rate (96.8%), trailing only Dallas’ Brandon Aubrey (33-for-33). During the game, he succeeded in all three of his attempts. He has only missed one of his 31 attempts this season.
The offensive star for New York was Breece Hall, who caught 12 passes for a season-high 96 receiving yards and ran for 95 yards and two touchdowns. The 22-year-old running back made team history by becoming the first player to record at least 75 receiving yards, 75 rushing yards, and two touchdowns in a single game. Hall, who scored a touchdown and ran for fifty yards last season, was a major factor in the Jets’ 31-30 victory over Cleveland.
