“Can’t have enough good QBs,” 49ers CEO Jed York makes intentions clear on Jimmy Garoppolo’s future if trade move doesn’t materialize

“Can’t have enough good QBs,” 49ers CEO Jed York makes intentions clear on Jimmy Garoppolo’s future if trade move doesn’t materialize

With three weeks until the start of their 2022 season, the 49ers are still saddled with a reserve quarterback on a bloated salary and an age bracket that would not afford Jimmy Garoppolo enough regular hours to justify that salary. Nonetheless, they have stated unequivocally that they have no reservations about keeping the 30-year-old quarterback, implying that the Franchise would not aggressively seek to drive him out.

Despite the 49ers’ intentions to sell Jimmy Garoppolo and usher in the Trey Lance era, he remains with the team, and San Francisco CEO Jed York has declared that he is happy with keeping Jimmy G on the roster.

“I’ve said this before, you can’t have enough good quarterbacks and good football players,” York told the Athletic’s, Tim Kawakami. “I watched it with Joe (Montana) and Steve (Young) and I realize the salary cap is different today than having no salary cap. But we’ve said it before: We’re happy to keep Jimmy. We’re happy to have him on the roster. And if that’s the case, then that’s the case.”

The catch is that Garoppolo will serve as a distraction and a pricey distraction at that. While he has been nothing but class throughout the entire process, his presence is still a stumbling block in their plans to move forward with Trey Lance as their staple QB for the foreseeable future.

Jimmy Garoppolo‘s shoulder injury at the close of last season’s playoffs stymied any trade plans, as it became evident that teams would only be interested in obtaining a fully fit QB. There has been no action on any fronts as of yet, with reported interest from both the Cleveland Browns and the New York Jets, but given that both of these clubs have seasoned QB backups ready, trade in this way is improbable.

Another team is rumoured to be interested in the Seattle Seahawks, but the 49ers would never trade with a competitor. As things currently stand, it appears that the 49ers and York will have to make do with having him around.
