“This sh*t over, I left everybody to go home and cried my eyes out”: A.J. Brown couldn’t believe that the New England Patriots chose N’Keal Harry over him in the NFL Draft
The NFL Draft Night experience is a rollercoaster ride for many, with the exception of the first-rounder picks who are guaranteed to be drafted, the remainder of the players have to sit back and bite their nails praying that they get a chance to showcase what they have worked for their entire life. It was the same for A.J. Brown who was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the second round at 51st overall of the 2019 draft. Things were originally supposed to be different as Brown had to go to the New England Patriots but then again we know how the league works…
Teams quickly change their mind and even if they give their word to a player before the draft, they need not necessarily act on it. A.J Brown shares his memory and rough experience on draft night when the team that he was a fan of from his childhood was looking to draft him but then ended up taking someone else. “I just knew I was going to the Patriots because I was a big Patriots fan,” Brown said.
“They tripping, like what the hell is going on”: A.J. Brown while the New England Patriots were on the clock
A.J. Brown recently appeared on a podcast with Ride The Wave Media where he gave us a detailed experience of the things that took place on the draft night, “I just knew it, everything went fine with them,” Brown said on his workout with the Pats and based on all the interactions that he had with the team and other officials, he thought he was surely going there.
“I got a phone call and I’m like ‘this is it,’ but it wasn’t it. It was my agent, he was like ‘just sit tight,’ and I’m like okay. ‘They (Patriots) gonna take a receiver,’ I’m like okay, cool.” Brown thought that it was his turn to go up and wear the cap, however, things turned out differently.
“I just saw the time kept going on the Patriots clock and I was like they tripping, like what the hell is going on. They end up picking, they said the pick was in. I know I ain’t got a phone call by now so I’m like this shit over.” A.J Brown could not hold back after this, he broke down.
“I told my brother, I told D, I said, ‘bro let’s go,’ and I left everybody at the house and went home, I went in the closet and cried my eyes out,” Brown said. It is remarkable to see how he has progressed from that night onwards, from being overlooked by the Pats to signing a 4-year $100 million contract with the Eagles, it just goes to show us that if you truly work hard, you will get the fruits that result from it!
