“End of an era?” Aaron Donald’s retirement talks catch fire as the Super Bowl champion is ‘most likely’ ruled out of the season due to an injury

Rams DT Aaron Donald has been ruled out of this week’s game against the Denver Broncos and reportedly could be out for the season. On Friday, Rams HC Sean McVay confirmed Donald will miss this week’s game and is unlikely to play again this season. Interestingly, this is the first time that Donald is out due to an injury in his elite career. He suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 12 and the injury will most likely end his season.

In the 11 games Donald played this season, he had 49 tackles, five sacks, 10 tackles for loss, and one forced fumble. His performance has been at par this year but the team’s collective failure means that all of this was in vain. The Rams, who are the Super Bowl champions, are having one of the worst seasons and have an abysmal record of 4-10.

They collectively look very poor and are playing below-average football. Their season is over and hence it doesn’t make much sense to push Donald to recover fast. When coach McVay was asked if Donald might play again this season, he was quick to respond: “Probably not.”

After Donald won the Super Bowl with the Rams last season, there were talks about his retirement. It was speculated that Donald wants to retire on a high and his reaction to the matter didn’t give away much clarity. Eventually, he decided not to retire but in hindsight, looking at the Rams’ 2022 season, retirement would’ve been a better choice for his legacy.

It is almost certain that Donald won’t be taking part further this season as the Rams’ campaign is a lost cause. Since retirement was on Donald’s mind last year and given that the Rams need to restructure their squad next season, fans are now strongly believing that Donald will retire at the end of the season.

If he retires, Donald will definitely go down as one of the best defensive tackles of all time. He is a Super Bowl champion, 3-time Defensive Player of the year, 7x First-team All-Pro, and 9x Pro Bowl. To add to it, he has achieved all this in just 9 years. Enough to say, he has cemented his place in the history books.
