The 2024 NFL draft is around the corner, and it is the right time for the teams to lay out their plans to prepare for the upcoming season. Just like Aaron Rodgers did when he advocated for two Jets free agents whom he hoped his team, the New York Jets, would re-sign.

After sustaining a season-ending injury at the beginning of the 2023 regular season, Rodgers couldn’t live up to the standards that the Jets and his fans expected when he was traded from the New York Giants last offseason.

Now that he is recovered and ready to get into action, he hopes not to have too many changes in the franchise’s roster.

In a special appearance on Cameron Hanes’s Keep Hammering Collective podcast, while talking about the upcoming season’s expectations, he highlighted two of the Jets’ players who went into free agency, hoping the franchise would consider re-signing them for another season.

We had last year an incredible kicker and punter. Both are older guys, which I love. But Thomas Morstead was our punter, he had a phenomenal season. He’s in his late 30s but takes care of himself incredibly well. He was just a weapon for us, with hang time, with inside-the-20 punts, inside-the-10 punts.
Rodgers said.

After a tragic season resulting in the Jets being the first team to be eliminated from the playoffs, multiple veteran players are potentially looking into the option of free agency.

But the star quarterback made it clear that he doesn’t want to let go of punter Thomas Morstead and kicker Greg Zuerlein, as he considers them “game-changing” players.

New York Jets eye strategic backup quarterback acquisitions in the 2024 NFL Draft

When the Jets traded the star quarterback Rodgers from the Giants, they had foreseen the Super Bowl trophy to their name.

Unfortunately, things didn’t go as they hoped. Rodgers couldn’t play past week 1 of the 2023 regular season, due to which the Jets’ offense crumped, resulting in a 7-10 season.

The biggest mistake at that time was not having any solid backup quarterback and entirely depending on Rodgers. Zach Wilson, who took over Rodgers’ position in his absence, also struggled throughout. But it seems the Jets have learned from their previous mistake.

The franchise is eyeing potential backup acquisitions this offseason along with Rodgers’ return as they aim to clinch the first playoff berth in over a decade.
