Is college football getting soft? Alabama Crimson Tide fans will say so. They saw a gentle brush on LSU Tigers quarterback Jayden Daniels being branded as a ‘roughing the passer.’
During a high-voltage game between two teams that could potentially go all the way, everyone expects the officiating to be top-notch. But in recent times, that hasn’t been the case 8 out of 10 times. Alleged bad calls from referees have been the subject of intense scrutiny, which has prompted a section of fans to demand penalties against the referees.
Alabama went into the Saturday night matchup with a 7-1 record, while LSU is 6-2 from their first eight games. The game kicked off with a few brisk pace plays until the momentum was broken by a soft call by the on-field referees.
On the 11th-minute mark in the first quarter, Bama’s outside linebacker, Jihaad Campbell, saw the opportunity and charged at Daniels. On his path was LSU tight end Mason Taylor. Campbell evaded the 6.6-footer and tried to stop the pass from the Tigers quarterback.
It looked to be nothing special until the referees pulled it back for roughing the passer. That definitely raised a few eyebrows, and even the commentators couldn’t believe it.
We can't figure out what it was! We just assume.....I don't know what it was. There's got to be something in there somewhere.CBS broadcaster can be heard saying.
Social media show frustration over the alleged wrong ‘roughing the passer’ call on LSU’s Jayden Daniels
When the play made its way onto social media, fans were angry to see the call from the referee. Besides the apparent frustration, some pointed out a minor detail that went overlooked.

Upon closer look, it seems one of the players in the queue had passed the air. The reaction from Daniels and lineman Will Campbell kind of gave it away.
However, the initial call was overturned into a hand-to-the-face mask by the Bama left tackle, Dallas Turner. A 15-yard penalty was given to LSU.
Later, Turner’s hit on Daniels in the fourth quarter ended the young QB’s night. Turner had an illegal contact with the LSU man just underneath his face mask, driving him into the ground.
Daniels went off but came back for one more play. But then he was taken off permanently. He will be checked for concussions finishing the game with 15 completions for 219 yards and 2 touchdowns.
