As the 2023 NFL season draws ever closer, the battle for who will be the top quarterback is heating up. Last year’s MVP, Patrick Mahomes, will undoubtedly be the pick for most, but few would beg to differ. Analyst Ric Bucher claims Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow can and will surpass Mahomes.
The argument that Burrow is capable of achieving what Mahomes has is not impossible. Both of them have been to the Super Bowl, but the only difference is that the Bengals player lost his. However, during that run back in 2021, the 26-year-old did beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship game.
Ric Bucher highlighted this fact and pointed out that Burrow has the capability of equaling or even surpassing Patrick Mahomes. “If you are asking me, can Joe Burrow dethrone Mahomes? Well, there’s no question in my mind that he can,” he said during the latest segment of FOX Sports 1’s Speak. “He (Burrow) has already beaten him (Mahomes) in the AFC championships. He’s gone to the Super Bowl. So he demonstrated that capability.”
Furthermore, last year was when the Chiefs’ quarterback cemented his place as the best in the league. The 27-year-old was the Super Bowl MVP and bagged his second ring. On the other hand, Burrow had a slight dip due to constant injury woes.
“Joe Burrow missed most of the training camp this year,” Bucher, who was born and brought up in Cincinnati, continued. “He had to remove his appendix.” Despite all the handicaps, the LSU graduate still managed to earn a Pro Bowl selection and finish fourth overall in the MVP rankings.
Burrow helped the Bengals beat the Baltimore Ravens in the 2022–23 NFL Playoff Wild Card round, setting up a rematch against the Chiefs, which they lost. This loss took Burrow and Mahomes head-to-head matchup to 3-1.
Joe Burrow was rated the 2nd-highest quarterback in Madden 24, behind Patrick Mahomes

Ric Bucher may want Bengals fans to believe that Joe Burrow has the potential to be a Super Bowl MVP, but for now, the NFL is Patrick Mahomes’ world.
While Burrow is part of the newest Madden 99 club and is second on the list. But he still has ways to go before surpassing the Chiefs player. EA recently released the top 10 quarterbacks in the game. They are:
1. Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs (99 rating)
2. Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals (95 rating)
3. Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills (94 rating)
4. Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens (91 rating)
5. Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles (88 rating)
6. Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers (87 rating)
7. Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys (87 rating)
8. Aaron Rodgers, New York Jets (86 rating)
9. Kirk Cousins, Minnesota Vikings (84 rating)
10. Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins (83 rating)
This ranking definitely outlines the gap between the AFC and NFC in the upcoming season. Dak Prescott and Kirk Cousins are the only two representatives of the National Football Conference.
