On Saturday, the Kansas City Chiefs, led by their former All-Pro quarterback Patrick Mahomes went against the Miami Dolphins in their wildcard game. The weather in Kansas City was so cold, that the Chiefs head coach Andy Reid‘s mustache got frozen during the game.
In just another example of how cold the game was, the NBC cameras picked up Reid’s mustache being frozen as a result of the cold weather. However, the cold weather and frozen mustache did not stop Reid from coaching his team from the sidelines during the decisive game.
After the game, the veteran head coach was asked about the brutal weather and his frozen mustache. Here’s what Andy Reid told ESPN’s Jeff Darlington about his mustache:
I guess the worst thing that could happen is it falls off.Andy Reid told Jeff Darlington
As predicted before, the Chiefs-Dolphins game became the coldest game that took place at the Arrowhead Stadium. During the kickoff, the weather was recorded at minus four degrees and it got colder as time progressed.
Nonetheless, the Chiefs and the Dolphins battled it out on the field in the extreme weather and put on a good show. Especially, the Chiefs surprised everyone by throwing the football a lot in the cold weather and defeated the Miami-based football team.
In the game, Mahomes completed 23 of his 41 pass attempts for 262 yards and 1 touchdown. Furthermore, he also used his legs to accumulate 41 rushing yards. Mahomes had great help from his rookie wide receiver Rashee Rice, who caught 8 passes for 130 yards and 1 touchdown while averaging 16.2 yards per reception.
Andy Reid opens up about game plan against the Dolphins
Coming into the game, which is expected to be one of the coldest games in history, many thought Andy Reid would plan his game around his rushing attack.
However, on Saturday, Reid surprised a lot of people by letting Patrick Mahomes throw the rock a lot in the extreme weather. Later, Reid credited Mahomes for performing well in the weather.
Patrick had a nice day. I don't think (the Dolphins) anticipated us throwing the ball as much as we did. A lot of quarterbacks can't do that in this type of weather.Andy Reid said via ESPN
Anyhow, the Chiefs managed to qualify for the next round of the postseason with a comfortable 26-7 victory against the Dolphins. Now, they will wait for the result of the wildcard game between the Buffalo Bills and the Pittsburgh Steelers to find out who will be their next opponent.
