The Sugar Bowl took place at the Superdome in New Orleans on Monday. It was a game between the Washington Huskies and the Texas Longhorns. Although the Huskies won the game, it was a special moment for Texas’ backup QB Arch Manning, whose grandfather, Archie Manning played from 1971 to 1982.
Though he acknowledges the history made there, the younger Manning has mixed feelings about his predecessor’s New Orleans Saints career. Since the elder Manning’s departure from the Saints in the middle of the 1982 season, the team has not issued his No. 8.
It has been understood for a long time that no Saint will ever wear it again, even though it hasn’t been officially retired. Arch Manning talked about his grandfather’s legacy at the Superdome before the Sugar Bowl.
Manning told The New Orleans Advocate, Rod Walker:
My granddad, he’s my biggest role model. It’s cool being back where he played, where he ran around and got killed (playing quarterback).Arch Manning to Rod Walker
The younger Manning did not play against the Huskies in the Sugar Bowl and was the backup to Quinn Ewers. The Longhorns lost the game, 37-31.
Manning will continue to serve as Texas’ backup quarterback for the upcoming season, unless Quinn Ewers makes the unexpected decision to declare for the 2023 NFL draft following the playoffs. As Cooper Manning‘s son, he hopes to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather and uncles Peyton Manning and Eli Manning by having a successful professional football career.
Arch Manning addressed rumors about him transferring from Texas before the Sugar Bowl
Arch Manning, the Texas Longhorns’ backup QB, talked to the media before their Sugar Bowl matchup against the Washington Huskies. During the session, he addressed the rumors surrounding his potential transfer from Texas in 2024 for more playing time.
Manning said, via The Athletic:
Obviously, there’s all these rumors, but I haven’t looked into transferring at all. I’m just focused on developing and helping this team in any way I can, and, hopefully, one day playing for the University of Texas like I always wanted to.Arch Manning speaking to the reporters
Manning played for the Longhorns for the first time against Texas Tech in November. He racked up 30 passing yards in a 57-7 win for the Longhorns. The QB will serve as the team’s backup if Texas’ starter Quinn Ewers decides to come back for another season, instead of declaring for the NFL draft. Texas lost the Sugar Bowl against the Huskies, 37-31.
