New Orleans Saints is an American professional football team that is an expansion franchise based in New Orleans. It’s a part of the National Football Conference (NFC) established in 1967. The initial year for the team was quite tough in the NFL as they lost 11 out of their 14 games.
Oddly for them, the Saints suffered continued futility for two decades, until finally, they posted their first-ever winning season. During their decades, the team had two notable players, one of whom was Archie Manning, the father of the prominent Manning brothers —Peyton and Eli, and Tom Dempsey. Archie still remains to be one of the most prominent quarterbacks in franchise history, from the period of 1971 to 1982. Dempsey established the NFL record of 63-yard game-winning field record in 1970.
The first winning season for the Saints came in 1987, led by quarterback Bobby Hebert and defense starring linebackers Sam Mills and Rickey Jackson. They together led a 12-3 record and debuted in the playoffs. However, they ended up losing to the Minnesota Vikings.
The following year, in 1998, they again set up a winning record but again faced a setback in the postseason. In 1990, they again reached the playoffs, they established a streak of three consecutive playoff berths.
A decade later, as 2000 approached, the Saints finally qualified for the postseason after a surprising victory over the reigning Super Bowl champion St. Louis Rams, which marked their first playoff victory.
With a potent offense led by QB Drew Brees, the Saints defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in the postseason, paving their way to the team’s first NFC championship game, however, they lost to the Chicago Bears. In 2009, they qualified for the playoffs and set a record of 13 wins — the highest-seeded team in the NFC. After defeating the Arizona Cardinals and Vikings, the Saints reached their first-ever Super Bowl appearance, where they scored a startling victory over the Indianapolis Colts and brought home the trophy of Super Bowl XLIV.
