Even the harshest critic of Bill Belichick would agree that the 71-year-old is one of the best coaches of all time, maybe even the GOAT. His time with the New England Patriots is laden with Super Bowl after Super Bowl. And yet one of his former players believes that if the veteran manager did not have Tom Brady, then the story would be different. Ex-Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel has tried to put the record straight by claiming Bill Belichick is not the best manager of all time.
It’s a bold statement considering his two Super Bowls came while playing under Belichick back in the mid-2000s. However, Samuel has often hit out at Belichick in the past, calling him out for bad decision-making post-Brady. Not too long ago, he came out in support of current Patriots quarterback Mac Jones. According to Samuel, Belichick’s unorthodox coaching changes have hurt Jones’ output. He believes that Belichick thinks he still has Tom Brady playing for him.
It’s not a secret anymore that since Brady‘s departure, the Patriots offense has taken a nose dive into the abyss. Last session, they were the 26th-best attack in the entire NFL and had the worst red zone efficiency.
Naturally, Jones’ form took a massive hit even after a promising rookie year that earned him a Pro Bowl. The 24-year-old Alabama native threw for 2,997 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions last year. Many even wanted fourth-round rookie Bailey Zappe to start in the center in place of Jones. But former and present players alike have backed Jones for a breakout 2023 season.
Asante Samuel is one of them, and he constantly states that Bill Belichick is the main problem. Even owner Robert Kraft will not wait any longer, as it’s bad for business.

Asante Samuel thinks Bill Belichick not the greatest manager of all time

Samuel recently spoke with CBS Sports’ All Things Covered host and former Pittsburgh Steelers player Bryant McFadden. He said,” Absolutely not. It was all Tom. Look at his (Bill Belichick) record without him. You’ve got to be great in different situations.”
Belichick doesn’t boast a great record without Tom Brady on his team. Boston.com reported last year that the eight-time Super Bowl-winning coach has a 71-79 record in 150 games.
Samuel continued to speak his mind: “Brady ain’t going to admit it. That’s why I’m here. I have been there and confronted him; that’s how I do.”
Together with Brady, Bill Belichick lifted the Vince Lombardi Trophy six times but never managed a three-peat. In 2020, Brady decided to call time on his Patriots career and look for a new challenge. He joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and to show his superiority, he lifted his seventh Super Bowl.
