“Abortion got banned before guns”: NFL players criticize the Supreme Court’s historic decision to make abortions illegal across the country
NFL Players lash out against the Supreme Court judgment
The talk of the entire nation is the landmark judgment of the Supreme Court of the United States overturning the Roe V Wade ruling that had previously legalized abortions across the country. The ruling was overturned by a majority of 6-3 in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case. The latest ruling was criticized by prominent politicians and athletes as well because it nullifies the Constitutional right to an abortion and weakens the right to privacy.
NFL players were also critical of this ruling and shared their two cents on it. Almost immediately after the top court announced its decision, NFL stars tweeted their thoughts out, all of them were in unison when it came to opposing this decision and expressing their disappointment in the ruling. Let us take a look at the reactions from players across the league.
“We are going backwards”: NFL Athletes are mad that the State is attempting to take control of its people’s lives
The Arizona Cardinals quarterback, Kyler Murray expressed his immense disappointment towards the court overruling the 50-year-old precedent, he tweeted the following.
The latest decision of the SCOTUS will not be the end of the road, there will be a lot of opposition to this ruling and it will not be surprising if it gets overruled within the next decade.
Darius, Slay, the cornerback for the Philadelphia Eagles shared the irony over how quick the Court was to ban abortions but still has refused to take any concrete action when it comes to gun control.
Gun control has been a much bigger issue that has led to the loss of thousands of lives over the years but the Supreme Court has not lifted a finger to try and ensure that guns end up only in the right hands, abortions are within the domain of personal decisions of an individual and do not do 1% of the harm that guns do but it makes sense to ban it because of moral issues.
Cam Jordan, the defensive end for the New Orleans Saints did not like this decision as he believes this will put more control in the hands of the State.
It may be tabled but will it be passed? That is doubtful as some governors such as Gavin Newsom of California, Kate Brown of Oregon, and Jay Inslee of Washington have joined their hands together to form the “West-Coast offense” which is their part to uphold abortion rights in their respective states. President Joe Biden has also reiterated that Democratic victories at the State level will help overcome this effort to ban abortion rights. “Congress must act,” the President stated.
Los Angeles Rams defensive player Bobby Wagner agreed with former President Barack Obama’s opinion of the Supreme Court’s judgment and retweeted it.
Cam Heyward, the Defensive Tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers hates this judgment as he feels it is taking us backward and hindering progress.
Why is it a tough decision to leave it to the woman to decide if she wants to have an abortion or not? If it is getting harder to decide on issues relating to personal freedom and the right to privacy then the future is grim.
All the players across the NFL who spoke on this issue were not comfortable that the State is trying to exercise control over women’s bodies and their personal lives. There are multiple circumstances under which abortion may be life-saving for women as some of them may be dealing with unwanted pregnancy as a result of sexual violations and they could even be facing health complications.
Athletes from all sports have come together to raise their voices against Roe V Wade being overturned, it is good to see that they no longer are being asked to “Shut up and dribble.”
