“They’re not gonna cut Baker because they’re the CLOWNSHOW Browns”: Skip Bayless ridicules the Browns for their handling of the Baker Mayfield situation
The Cleveland Browns are playing a different game of their own, the rules of which only they appear to understand. The team currently is stacked, with quarterbacks. Apart from Deshaun Watson, they have Baker Mayfield, Jacoby Brissett, and Joshua Dobbs. They intend to start Deshaun but his future hangs in the balance as the NFL is still conducting an investigation into him and is yet to announce the quantum of punishment. The Browns intend to make their next moves after they get a solid idea of what will happen with Watson. Till then they want to hold on to Baker Mayfield as an insurance policy.
No team has traded for Baker Mayfield yet, a part of the reason is that Cleveland is asking too much for him, the team that trades for him will have to undertake his $18 million cap amount, and going by the rumors around the league, his behavior in the locker room is not the best either. Cleveland is hoping to somehow convince Baker to return in case Watson cannot play this season. But this policy of the team is not the best and is being widely criticized by all as Baker has clearly said that he wants out.
“It is time for them to cut Baker but they won’t do it”: Skip Bayless does not think the Browns will release Baker Mayfield
This situation is unique as nobody knows what will happen, on one hand, the player does not want to be in that organization but the team does not want to let go. FOX Sports analyst Skip Bayless believes the Browns organization has damaged its own reputation by how it has handled this entire fiasco.
“My hashtag has gone from #FreeBaker to #CutBaker but they are not going to do it because they are the Clownshow Browns. We still have 6-7 weeks before training camp opens and we still have a thing called the salary cap in the NFL.” Skip goes on to say, “This has become the biggest game of offseason chicken in the history of this league as the rest of the league is pushing the Clownshow to cut him.“
Skip believes even if Baker remains on the roster, nobody wants to see him at training camp, “It may take all the way to camp but they don’t want Baker Mayfield to come to camp, their quarterback room is stocked, it’s three levels deep, with one level at $230 million deep (Deshaun Watson).”
Skip goes as far as to say that teams across the league are worried about his salary cap and they do not want to have that liability upon themselves. Baker may also be in talks with other teams as he wants to get cut for his own sake and no team would mind having him if they are getting him for free. Skip believes the possible destinations for Baker are Miami, and Atlanta as he is clearly better than Mariotta, and Seattle is another place where they could use a quarterback. “There are all kinds of opportunities out there but nobody wants to threaten their cap by paying him $18-$19 million. They’re waiting because there’s still time to wait until Cleveland gets pushed to the opening of training camp corner and then they have no choice but to trade him.”
It is difficult to say what the future holds for Baker but considering he wants out, in all likelihood, he will get his way and money and hopefully lands on a team where he can showcase his true potential.
