“I’m rolling with the punches” Panthers QB Baker Mayfield reacts to getting demoted to backup behind in-form QB PJ Walker
Baker Mayfield was traded to the Panthers to change their fortunes, but so far the former Browns QB has had a lukewarm start to the season.
Less than eight games into the season, Mayfield has been named as the backup to PJ Walker, who is turning out to be a revelation for the Panthers currently.
Mayfield had a terrible 2-5 record with the Panthers, which led to him being demoted to the backup role, but surprisingly, the Panthers QB is content with the role and looking forward to it.
There were rumors about Baker Mayfield requesting a trade, but the QB squashed has squashed all of them. “I’ve spent enough times with these guys,” Mayfield said when asked about requesting a trade ahead of Tuesday’s deadline. “I want to be here.”
Mayfield will have to get comfortable being a backup as this is the first time the QB has been demoted to a backup role since being drafted in 2018.
“You just have to roll with the punches,” Baker Mayfield said. “It’s not my plan, obviously. I’m a competitor, but I’m rolling with the punches to help this team out in any way I can.”
“I came here to win. If it’s my role to help PJ out from the sideline and help this defense out with scout team stuff, I’m gonna do it. And I’m gonna do it with everything I can.”
Baker Mayfield will have to adapt to a different role and responsibility as the backup QB
Baker Mayfield will have to get used to his new role in the team, which is majorly supporting and assisting the starting QB PJ Walker. The former Browns QB was recently spotted running a training drill with d-linesmen and it completely broke all the fans who loved Mayfield.
Some fans have also speculated that his career is almost over and he won’t be able to take the starting place as PJ Walker has made the spot his own in a couple of games. Though Mayfield has lots of respect for Walker and is looking forward to assisting him in any way.
“I don’t think he’s ever had that mindset. He was fourth on the depth chart,” Baker Mayfield said. “PJ’s a great leader. He’s a great quarterback. He’s a guy that’s continuously stepped up in this place. He’s obviously been a few other spots, but he didn’t hesitate.”
The Panthers will face the Atlanta Falcons in their next game, with Mayfield sitting on the sidelines and Walker again taking up QB duties.
