The Baker Mayfield era is done in Cleveland, we all knew that the moment he asked out of the organization, however, the Browns played hardball with him and attempted to keep him on as a sort of an insurance policy in case Deshaun Watson was not eligible to play this upcoming season, however, that plan did not work out as the ties between the player and the organization were damaged beyond repair. In addition to this, Baker’s salary cap was an issue, the Browns previously did not want to undertake any part of it, but after the latest trade, the team will play $10.5 million of his salary.
The trade talks with the Carolina Panthers have been in the works now for a while. There were a lot of issues that the teams faced and multiple disagreements arose which led to speculation that the Panthers would maybe refrain from wanting anything to do with Baker, however, this is no longer the case.

The quarterback was entitled to receive $18.8 million as his salary, however, the latest deal will give him only $10 million from the Browns and $4.85 million from the Panthers. The teams have persuaded Baker to convert the remainder of his salary into incentives to make the deal happen. The quarterback still has to undergo the physical test and he is eligible to earn the deficit in his salary based on team performance as per ESPN.
The Cleveland Browns will get a fourth or fifth-round pick in 2024, all depending on how Baker plays in Carolina. If he ends up playing 70% of the snaps till that time, the team will have to give up a fourth-round pick otherwise the Browns will get a fifth-rounder.
Baker, the 1st pick in the 2018 draft will now compete with Sam Darnold once more. Both the quarterbacks are from the same draft class and there is also Matt Corral, the third-round pick of the Panthers in this year’s NFL draft.
Carolina expressed that it will not be trading Sam Darnold after acquiring Baker. If Baker wins the starter’s role, he will face the Cleveland Browns in the season opener. With Baker gone, the Browns have Jacoby Brissett as their starter considering Deshaun Watson’s future remains in jeopardy.
This trade makes Baker the third quarterback in NFL history to be drafted no.1 overall and last under four seasons with the team that selected him. We hope he gets to prove everyone wrong as a Panther and make a solid comeback.
