Stefon Diggs could have possibly played for the reigning Super Bowl winner, the Kansas City Chiefs, in the upcoming season. However, NBC Sports analyst Chris Simms claimed that the Buffalo Bills blocked the move, which led to Diggs signing with the Houston Texans.
On Wednesday night, news broke that the Bills had agreed to trade Stefon Diggs to the Texans. In return, the Bills received 2024 second and sixth-round picks, as well as a 2025 fifth-rounder.
It appears that Houston wasn’t the 30-year-old’s first preference. During the recent segment of PFT Live, former NFL quarterback turned analyst Chris Simms told fellow host Mike Florio that he was aiming for a move to the Kansas City Chiefs, which the Bills did not allow.
From what I do know, right, he was allowed to seek a trade from anybody in the league, except the Kansas City Chiefs. That's what I've been told by multiple people.Chris Simms revealed
Social media reacts to the Bills’ snubbing Stefon Diggs’ chance to play for the Chiefs
Diggs had signed a four-year, $104 million extension with the Bills in 2022. The trade with the Texans will force the Bills to take on more than $31 million in dead-cap hit. ESPN Stats noted that this was the highest-ever dead-cap hit ever taken for a wide receiver in the NFL.
The four-time Pro Bowler still had two more years left in Buffalo. Yet he opted to get out before the 2024 season began. To many, this was a forgone conclusion considering the shaky relationship between him and quarterback Josh Allen.
Understandably, along with the latest report of the Bills disallowing Diggs from seeking trade with the Kansas City team, was bound to garner reactions from netizens. Check out some of the comments down below:
Simms later wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that the Bills have had enough of Diggs.
From the Bills perspective, the main thing that jumps out is that they must have been [so] done with Stefon Diggs to trade him for that return AND to leave themselves that bare at WR AND take that cap hit AND trade him within the AFC.Chris Simms via X
Before the trade, Robert Griffin III sent out a tweet, claiming that both Allen and Diggs benefited from each other. The Maryland graduate made a snarky comment on the post, hinting at his intent.
Just one day later, he was on a jet bound for Texas. The Bills could have easily kept him in the meadowlands for one more year, and despite the risks, they traded Diggs away.
This move significantly weakens the Bills wide receiver core. Last season, Stefon Diggs registered 107 catches for 1,183 receiving yards, earning his fourth consecutive Pro Bowl nod.
Diggs now joins the Texans roster, which boasts the likes of Nico Collins and Tank Dell. More importantly, 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year, quarterback CJ Stroud.
