San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy‘s breakthrough season was one to remember. The 49ers reached the NFC Championship game with Purdy as their quarterback but unfortunately suffered a 31-7 defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Amidst the defeat, it was a devastating night for Purdy himself as he suffered a right elbow injury. He was replaced by backup Josh Johnson later but had to return to the gridiron after the latter suffered a concussion. However, he failed to make any meaningful impact on the game handicapped largely by the elbow injury.

The 23-year-old will require surgery on his elbow, but that has been postponed on his njured ulnar collateral ligament now, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero. He reported that Purdy has met with his doctor who gave him the recommendation to postpone the surgery. The duo will meet once again in March to decide what needs to be done, with all signs pointing towards a UCL repair for the rookie quarterback.

Purdy took over the quarterback role from veteran Jimmy Garoppolo and finished the season with a 5-0 record in the regular season, before he went onto register a couple of postseason victories over the Seahawks and the Cowboys respectively.

49ers general manager John Lynch had earlier given a six month timeline on the injury after the game against the Eagles.

“I think the positive bit of news is that it seems to be consistent that the right approach is that one that takes about that six-month mark,” Lynch said.

“Now, everybody will also say you never know until you get in there. Every surgeon will tell you that on every surgery, you always like getting in to see exactly. The MRI tells you a lot of the pictures, so they’re continuing to work through that process, but we seem encouraged by the prognosis that that’s kind of where it’s at.”

The franchise is confident of the fact that Purdy will return for the 2023 season and is all set to retain the starting quarterback role.
