The first touchdown pass of Sunday came in Pittsburgh. It was a 8-yard pass from Brock Purdy to Brandon Aiyuk. The San Francisco 49ers diced up the Pittsburgh Steelers for 30 points with Purdy throwing for 220 yards and two touchdowns. Purdy’s performance came on the back of Steelers’ CB Patrick Peterson claiming that he would pick him off after recognizing some ‘tells’ from the young QB.
“There is some tell signs out there that tells us what plays we’re gonna get from those guys in certain situations,” Peterson said on podcast ‘All things Covered’ before the game. “When I get my pick Sunday, we’ll talk about it.” Purdy was asked about it before the game and the QB responded with ‘We’ll see’. After the game, Purdy was asked about his performance and his connection with Aiyuk. He gave a rather cheeky response by taking a dig at Peterson.
“The second touchdown, the deep ball, was that on Patrick Peterson?,” Purdy cheekily asked the reporters in the post-game press conference. Both his touchdown passes were to Aiyuk, who was a primary matchup of Peterson throughout the game. It’s fair to say that Purdy came out on top in this QB-CB battle.
The 49ers are contenders to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl this year and they played like one in their opening game. The Steelers would hope to have a better outing next Monday against the Cleveland Browns, whereas the Niners will play the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday and will look to continue from where they left off yesterday.
Patrick Peterson doubles down on his ‘tells’ comment after loss to the 49ers
The Pittsburgh Steelers‘ DB Patrick Peterson caused a lot of stir before their first game against the San Francisco 49ers. On a podcast before the game, Peterson said that he has some ‘tells’ about the Niners QB Brock Purdy that will help him intercept the young QB. That did not happen obviously, as the Niners and Purdy rolled over the Steelers and won the game in convincing fashion.
Purdy threw for two scores on Peterson, without an interception. After the game, Peterson was asked about his comments.“No. [The tells were] there. I had an opportunity to get two picks. I just didn’t grab it in,” Peterson told the reporters. He further went on to praise the 49ers for sticking to their game plan.
The Steelers will hope to have a bounce-back game against the Cleveland Browns on September 18. The Browns beat the Cincinnati Bengals in their first game and will prove to be another tough opponent for the Steelers.
