Former MVP Cam Newton‘s ‘game manager’ comment on Brock Purdy became a talking point this season. Some players and analysts endorse such comments, whereas others shut down the “game manager” tag. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback recently addressed the comments.
In an interview with ESPN, the quarterback said he did not take the comment seriously. Instead, he laughed at it. With a smile on his face, the quarterback made sure that he did not care much about the comment. This is what Purdy said:
I think it’s sort of funny, just because you know we’re winning…. I think over time I might get some respect.Brock Purdy via ESPN
Cam Newton created a lot of controversy with his statement that Brock Purdy was not a game-changer. He insisted that Purdy managed games well with his technique, but he was not a game-changer. He also added that Purdy was the tenth-best player on his team. When his statement met with controversy, he tweaked it but stood by what he initially said. He claimed that he did not intend to spread hate towards Purdy.
Brock Purdy remains calm and did not take an offense to the comment made by Cam Newton. However, he wants to win the Super Bowl against the Chiefs. Purdy will have to play his A-game against the Chiefs to win the ultimate prize.
Brock Purdy got a lot of support from others in the whole fiasco
In the entire fiasco, Brock Purdy attracted a lot of support from other NFL personalities. Notably, two of them were from opponent teams. The Kansas City Chiefs head coach and defensive coordinator both explained Brock Purdy’s brilliant style of playing. Analyst Richard Sherman also supported Brock Purdy.
Taking the issue to X, Sherman clapped back at the critics. Some fans have joined the ‘game manager’ bandwagon and refuse to give Purdy his praise. Richard Sherman used Purdy’s NFC Championship game as an example to mock the haters. Check out what Sherman tweeted in the below tweet.
Purdy made good players in the NFC Championship game to help the 49ers come back from a 17-point deficit in the first half. He now has an opportunity to claim the ultimate prize. If he wins the Super Bowl, the ‘game manager’ tag will cease to exist.
