The Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Jason Licht pulled a rabbit out of his hat and somehow re-signed both Jamel Dean and Lavonte David in the 2023 free agency despite experts predicting that he would have to lose one or the other due to salary cap restrictions. Fortunately for the Bucs, Licht was able to perform salary cap magic but he could’ve lost David to Buffalo if Von Miller helped the Bills’ GM in recruiting.

During a recent episode of the Rich Eisen Show, the Buccaneers’ former All-Pro linebacker Lavonte David confirmed that he received interest from the Bills‘ front office and revealed why he chose to stay in Tampa Bay over the Buffalo-based football team.

“Yeah, I heard a little chatter (from the Bills),” David told Eisen. You know, it was basically when I was just starting to get a little tight with the Bucs. When I was about to, you know, the deal was about to get pulled (off), I heard a little chatter from the Bills. But I was already locked in with Tampa. It’s where I wanted to be for obvious reasons.”

Besides, David also claimed that he would’ve considered joining the Bills if the All-Pro linebacker Von Miller reached out to him. “I didn’t have no conversation with Von. Oh no,” David told Eisen. “If he would have reached out, it would have been a different conversation.”

Lavonte David is one of the greatest Buccaneers players of all time. He is one of the only four players in the franchise’s history to play in 12 or more seasons for them. He also played a crucial role in the Bucs’ Super Bowl run under Tom Brady in the 2020 season.

While everyone expected David to sign a big contract with a Super Bowl contender, he re-signed with the Buccaneers on a one-year deal with $7 million in guaranteed money.

The 33-year-old LB along with Devin White makes the Buccaneers’ linebacker room one of the best in the league. Even though David is getting old, he still has plenty of gas left in his tank and is one of the defensive captains of the team.

The Bucs have re-signed Jamel Dean, Lavonte David, and some other depth players. And with Shaq Barrett‘s return and the addition of the young QB Baker Mayfield, the Buccaneers might end up winning the NFC South division title for the third consecutive year.
