“Incoming drug test”: NFL fans go BERZERK over Matt Araiza’s 82-yard punt against the Colts

Matt Araiza

Buffalo Bills rookie Matt Araiza is already living up to his moniker of ‘Punt God’. He is one of the few players who brings with him quite a bit of enthusiasm and excitement to the fans and that for any punter is hard to do. The Punt God has just played one preseason game in the NFL and on his first kick ever as a professional athlete, he just ended all debate if any on who should be the Bills punter.

With under a minute left in the first half against the Indianapolis Colts, the Buffalo Bills were in a fourth and down situation from their 18-yard line, since it’s the preseason, Araiza’s name was called and the rook showed us why his name was Punt God by kicking the ball far far away. He kicked the ball for 82 yards, take a look for yourself here!

With his 82-yard punt, Matt Araiza joins elite company as only 25 players in the NFL’s history have managed to kick a ball that far during the course of a game. To do this on your very first play as a pro, wow, watch out everyone, you do not want to put the Bills in a fourth and down situation, not when they got that kind of horsepower in Matt Araiza’s leg.

This is nothing new for him, in college, he used to make such plays on the regular. It comes as no surprise that he led the entire country in punting average with 51.4 yards per punt. He had over 6 punts of 70 yards in just 2021. No player in the NFL has had that many long punts in a single season. Araiza punted the ball for 86-yards in college and etched his name in the record books. Drafted in the sixth round by the Bills, he is turning out to be quite the steal. NFL fans were amazed by his punt and had some amazing reactions.

Absolutely, what a beauty!

I don’t see him kick 82-yarders like they’re nothing. Cooke’s longest punt is 68 yards.

Who?

Yes, Most Valuable Punt, that’s the only MVP he’s getting.

The longest punt recorded is a 98-yarder which happened to be kicked by a rookie as well. Steve O’ Neal of the New York Jets set the record in 1969, one of the few times you get to see the NY Jets make an appearance in the record books.
