The NFL off-season is heating up as the league steadily approaches the 2023 Draft Day. As a part of the scouting process, the athletes are showing off their skills at the NFL Combine. The projected No.1 overall pick Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud also attended the Combine and showed off his skills, but unfortunately for him, it was his press meet involving Deshaun Watson and Michael Vick that grabbed the media attention.
The talented Ohio State QB addressed the media during the Combine and was asked about the people that inspired him growing up. To that, Stroud first mentioned the former Philadelphia Eagles QB, Michael Vick.
“ He [Michael Vick] inspired me not only to be athletic and use my athleticism but as a black quarterback, to stay in the pocket and throw the ball,” said Stroud. “That’s something he was very underrated in.” Furthermore, the 6’3″ QB C.J. Stroud also named the Cleveland Browns QB Deshaun Watson and the Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow as the quarterbacks that he looks up to.
“I look up to Deshaun Watson a lot as somebody I feel as I have a similar playing style too,” Stroud told reporters on Friday. “And then Joe Burrow, being able to create. Not being the fastest guy but being able to extend plays, throw guys off of you, and just be tough.”
Two of the three guys that Stroud mentioned are involved in problematic activities over the years. During the 2022 season, Deshaun Watson was suspended for 11 games due to the multiple sexual assault allegations against him which were settled outside the court.
CJ Stroud’s mention of Michael Vick grabs attention

In 2007, then-27-year-old Michael Vick was arrested after the police seized 48 dogs from his kennels in Virginia during a raid. The former Pro Bowl quarterback was arrested for involving in dog fighting.
The star quarterback pleaded guilty to the dogfighting crime and served 18 months in federal prison. Due to this incident, Vick lost all his sponsorships and had to return the signing bonus from the 10-year contract he signed with the Atlanta Falcons, which made him the highest player in NFL history at that time.
Anyway, after being released by the Falcons, Vick went on to play for the Philadelphia Eagles, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the New York Jets. Moreover, the QB retired in 2015 and has a successful career as a TV analyst.
And now, the Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud’s mention of the two problematic quarterbacks as his role model raised some eyebrows at the NFL Combine. Stroud’s PR team will have to work overtime to clean up this mess.
