Houston Texans have a big decision to make regarding who will become their starting quarterback for the season, like many other franchises. It is a sort of decision that can make or break a franchise’s season, proving to be the difference between a successful and a disappointing campaign.

The two names in contention currently are rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud and Davis Mills, with head coach DeMeco Ryans yet to make a final choice between the duo. However, according to various reports, the battle is currently being led by the former Ohio State quarterback, Stroud, who has performed exceptionally well during the training sessions over the past couple of months in the offseason.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer pointed out that Stroud has impressed the coaches and teammates with his physical attributes and the way he has carried himself on the big stage so far. The 21-year-old, who was the second overall pick in the NFL 2023 draft, has shown admirable leadership qualities within these months that have reportedly tipped the scales in his favor.

Despite these reports, Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans has remained tight-lipped so far on who will actually start as their No.1 cometh their Week 1 game against the Baltimore Ravens. Ryans has encouraged competition among the duo, hoping that it would bring out the best in them, with the superior man eventually separating himself out.

“For a quarterback, you have to have a short memory. You can’t let one bad play become three bad plays, right? Put that behind you. You’re going to make some bad plays, but as long as it doesn’t matriculate into other bad plays, then I’m fine with that,” head coach DeMeco Ryans said in a recent presser. “To see him and see his resolve, the way he was able to come back, compete, drive the offense down for a touchdown there at the end of practice — that was pretty cool to see.”

“We’ll see where their process goes in training camp and see as the competition continues. We’ll see who separates themselves,” concluded Ryans.

Playing at Ohio State, C.J. Stroud came close to winning the Heisman trophy in 2021 and 2022, ending up as a finalist in both years. He will look to make an impact on the bigger stage next season and needs to cement his spot as the undoubted starter of the Texans in the coming days. C. J. Stroud’s net worth is over $2 million and he is on line to bag one of the biggest rookie contracts in the NFL.
