All eyes were on Caleb Williams on Wednesday when the USC hosted their annual Pro Day. After opting out of the NFL Combine last month, from general managers to NFL scouts, everyone wanted to see what the fuss was all about.
They weren’t disappointed. Throughout the day, the Trojans, departing quarterback, showcased precision with the ball. But more importantly, they wanted to see with their own eyes his arm strength, which an ESPN report claimed to be on par with Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, and Josh Allen.
Williams gave them a glimpse of his arsenal on his final throw of the event. He faked a handoff and proceeded to launch a deep pass to receiver Brenden Rice on a skinny post route. It was so accurately measured that the ball landed straight into the waiting hands of Rice down the field at the opposite 17-yard line. A perfect 70-yard dime.
Pro Day isn’t the be-all and end-all for any football prospect, certainly not for a quarterback. The Chicago Bears general manager, Ryan Poles, who was present at the event, must have been giddy in his shoes watching how good Caleb Williams is. They are the favorites to land the 22-year-old and to make room for him, the Bears even traded away Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Is Caleb Williams locked in as the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft?
The Bears hold the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft via the Carolina Panthers. Meanwhile, several NFL scouts and analysts projected that Caleb Williams would be the first player selected during the draft.

The Bears have been shopping around in free agency, keeping Williams in mind as their starting quarterback next season. They have added experienced tight end Gerald Everett, veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen, and former Eagles running back D’Andre Swift. Besides, they already had solid weapons in the shape of DJ Moore and Cole Kmet.
However, anything can happen on draft day. It’s not a foregone conclusion that the Bears will be able to land Caleb Williams. What if he does an Eli? Senior NFL reporter Jori Epstein recently discussed a scenario where Williams is not the No. 1 pick.
The idea is that it would be shocking that the [Chicago] Bears didn't pick him. But if you're wondering whether the other top drafting teams have interest [the New York Giants, the Washington Commanders, the New England Patriots], pretty much anyone who is important to the decision for the top three drafting teams was at USC today.
Even Williams isn’t 100% sure enough that he will be a Bear next season.
I wouldn't say it's my full expectation. Obviously, things can happen. Things can change. Control what you can control.Williams said.
Williams will be the most talked-about player in the draft. Whether it’s the Bears or the Washington Commanders, it remains to be seen.
