Looks like Cam Newton‘s comment on calling top MVP contenders such as Dak Prescott and Brock Purdy ‘game-managers’ hasn’t worked quite well for him. It backfired to the extent that the former NFL quarterback had to address the critics himself.

In a recent episode of his 4th & 1 with Cam Newton, the former Carolina Panthers’ quarterback asserted his opinion on top leading quarterbacks as manager instead of game-changer. He had argued that they don’t need to score every time, just don’t have to throw a pick every time. Newton said:

If we're gonna really call a spade a spade, a game manager is different than a game changer.

As expected, his firm opinion spread like wildfire on the internet and the former MVP received immense criticism from both sports analysts as well as fans, especially when Newton himself hadn’t signed by any team. As it reached a certain level, Newton had to come out in his defense, saying game-manager isn’t a negative term.

Newton said in his defense:

Game manager is not a negative connotation. 'Cam, what do you mean by game manager?' My definition of that managing player is a player who has the ability to make the right play at the right time, protecting the football at all costs.

He further added:

When I think about ultimate, elite game managers—Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Tom Brady. Game-changer and game manager is not something where I'm saying this person is not physically capable of making some great plays. I'm not saying that or I am not saying that they're not good players.

Despite the criticisms, Newton still stands by his opinion and also listed the only three to five top game-changers that he considers, naming Aaron Rodgers, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, and Patrick Mahomes.

Why hasn’t Cam Newton signed with any team this season?

There have been many speculations and rumors surrounding the reasonable question: why Cam Newton did not play this season? And even more interesting, why the quarterback hasn’t been signed by any team.

Earlier this year, in October, Newton during his appearance on ‘RG3 and The Ones’ with former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III, said before signing a deal with any team, he needed to first be well-compensated financially.

After spending most of his career games with the Carolina Panthers resulted in him leading the team to the Super Bowl, Newton won the 2015 MVP title. As he was released by them in 2019, the quarterback then joined the New England Patriots. When they released him, he rejoined the Panthers for the 2021 season. After playing eight games with that, he was again released and since then the quarterback hasn’t joined any other NFL team.
