The NFL Wildcard game between the Los Angeles Chargers and the Jacksonville Jaguars was not for the faint-hearted. The Jaguars pulled off one of the biggest heists of NFL history against Brandon Staley and co. as they ended up winning by a margin of 31-30.

The Chargers had a whopping lead of 27-0 after the end of the first half and blew it entirely courtesy of a shambolic performance in the second half. It was the third-largest comeback in terms of points in a postseason, a record that depicts how poor the Chargers were in the latter stages.

If the Chargers had it entirely their way in the first half, with Justin Herbert at the helm, Jaguars had quarterback Trevor Lawrence turn up the heat with four touchdowns. The 23-year-old overshadowed his opposite number. Following the defeat, the questions surrounding Chargers head coach Brandon Staley‘s future at the franchise have started to gather momentum.

The Chargers have now failed to win a single postseason game since 2018, and this defeat will hurt just that bit more simply because of how close they were. Brandon Staley was extremely disappointed that his side could not finish off the game despite gaining a huge lead.

The head coach felt this was one of the toughest ways to lose a playoff game, and also felt the second-half performance didn’t feel like the Chargers playing out on the field.

“Anytime you’re up 27-7 at halftime and you’ve got four takeaways and you end up winning the takeaway margin (5-0), it’s going to be a killer,” Staley said in his post-match press conference. “I’m hurting for everybody in that locker room. It’s a special group of guys. This is the toughest way that you can lose in the playoffs certainly with the way we started the game. That’s the team that I know that we’re capable of being, and in the second half, we just didn’t finish the game.”

After two seasons of being in charge of things at the Chargers, Staley’s time might just have come to an end. He arrived with a big reputation in 2021 and a lot was expected of him this season, especially after the type of offseason they had in terms of personnel being brought into the side.
