Chicago Bears linebacker Roquan Smith has finally made the call to ask for a trade move away from the franchise ahead of the 2022 NFL season. The linebacker is currently placed on the physically unable to perform list, as the franchise did not give in to his request of a new contract.

Roquan Smith claimed that the current coaching staff does not value his skillset at the franchise and hence it would be in his best interests to go somewhere he would be well valued.

“The new front office regime doesn’t value me here,” Roquan Smith wrote in part. “They’ve refused to negotiate in good faith, every step of this journey has been ‘take it or leave it’. The deal sent to me is one that would be bad for myself, and for the entire LB market if I signed it. I’ve been trying to get something done that’s fair since April, but their focus has been on trying to take advantage of me.

The 25-year-old further went on to state how he wanted to win the Super Bowl for the Chicago Bears, and that the franchise have offered him a deal not upholding the condition of the current linebacker market in the NFL. However, Roquan Smith did leave the open for a mitigation in the matter if something positive came out of a chat with the McCaskey family, who owns the franchise.

Roquan Smith further wrote, “I wanted to be a Bear for my entire career, help this team bring a (Super Bowl) back to our city. However, they have left me no choice than to request a trade that allows me to play for an organization that truly values what I bring to the table.

“I haven’t had the chance to talk to the McCaskey family, and maybe they can salvage this, but as of right now I don’t see a path back to the organization I truly love.”
