Super Bowl LVII champions, Kansas City Chiefs, have seen a lot of their players leave in the first wave of free agency. The offense is now lacking star players as wide receivers JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman left the Chiefs to join the Patriots and the Jets, respectively. With limited options and no free agency signing until now, Kansas City needs someone to step up to the plate.
In conversation with NFL Network’s Steve Wyche during the Annual League Meeting on Saturday, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid talked a great deal about the current situation of the team and a few key players. When he was asked about the scenario of the wide receiving corps, Reid said he wants Skyy Moore to rise up to the occasion and fill in the hole left behind by Smith-Schuster and Hardman.
“We are expecting Skyy Moore to step up,” Reid said. “We’ll just see how everything else works. We got the same guys coming back that we had, and we like that group with the exception of JuJu. Mecole was banged up a little bit so he didn’t have a chance to play as much as he would have wanted. We’ll work out the thing without JuJu. Somebody will have to step up and take that spot.”
Skyy Moore moves up the depth chart in 2023 after JuJu and Hardman’s exit from Kansas City

Skyy Moore was selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft by the Chiefs. Moore didn’t see a lot of playing time since the WR depth chart in Kansas City consisted of JuJu, Hardman, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Kadarius Toney. The young wideout did appear in 16 games in a relief role and scored in three of them. Moore caught 22 receptions for 250 yards.
The 22-year-old scored his first career touchdown in Super Bowl LVII victory against the Eagles. There are a lot of expectations from Skyy Moore in the 2023 season. He will have to step up and take the role of being a primary receiver for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Andy Reid is confident that if players like Moore come into their role then Mahomes will have the continued success he’s had until now.
Reid also gave an update on Mahomes’ gruesome injury he suffered in the divisional playoff game against the Jaguars which he aggravated in the Super Bowl. “He didn’t have to get anything done. He’s doing good, he feels good,” Reid said. “This time, he jumped right back into workouts and working the ankle, rehabbing the ankle. He’s lifting and running the parts that he could run, and he didn’t miss a beat on that.”
The Chiefs’ depth chart now consists of Skyy Moore, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Kadarius Toney. There were rumors about Kansas City being one of the potential destinations for free agent Odell Beckham Jr. Andy Red didn’t give a definite answer when asked if the team will be adding the veteran wide receiver to the team. Skyy Moore can become Patrick Mahomes’ primary receiver just like Tyreek Hill was a few years back if he performs well enough as the coaches want him to. Let’s see if he steps up to the plate like head coach Reid wants him to or falls short of the task.
