Last Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs managed to secure a 17-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship game. That thrilling matchup between those two teams was the most-watched AFC game in the league’s history.
According to the CBS Sports data, the game garnered more than 55 million viewers on average. It peaked at 64.02 million viewers. A record that no AFC Championship game managed to achieve.
Before the Ravens vs the Chiefs AFC matchup, it was the 2011 game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Jets that held the record for the most watched AFC game. The game registered a whopping 54.9 million viewers. The game between the Ravens and the Chiefs broke that record with 55.5 million. A record that would make all parties happy.
Despite attracting more than 55.5 million viewers, the game between the Ravens and the Chiefs did not become the most-viewed game. Instead, the NFC Championship game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Detroit Lions became the most viewed game.
The NFC Conference Championship final attracted 57 million viewers on average. It witnessed a sheer increase of 19% in viewership from last year’s NFC Championship game. With this, it surpassed the viewership of the AFC Conference Championship. The Niners beat the Lions in a thrilling encounter witnessed by more than 57 million viewers.
The Chiefs also benefited from the appearance of the famous pop singer Taylor Swift. According to the data cited by Front Office Sports, Swift generated a brand value of $331.5 million for the Chiefs and the NFL.
CBS Sports garnered record viewership in the Divisional rounds as well
The season went well for CBS Sports as they garnered a lot of viewership not only in the conference championship but also in the regular season and divisional playoff games. The example of the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills could be cited here.
The average viewership of the much-anticipated playoff game between two rivals stood at more than 50 million. It registered a whopping 8.6% increase in viewership. Earlier, the record stood at 42.7 million viewers. But the Divisional round clash eclipsed all the records.
With the instance of growing viewership in every game, CBS is expecting a record-breaking Super Bowl clash in terms of viewership. Last season’s Super Bowl battle between the Chiefs and the Eagles had 112.2 million viewers. CBS is expecting an increase in numbers.
All eyes are on the Super Bowl now. The Chiefs will be facing the Niners on February 11 in the exciting title game. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are on the verge of winning consecutive championships.
