The Kansas City Chiefs currently have the best quarterback in the league, Patrick Mahomes, in their squad. However, their backup QB situation looks a bit shaky. The veteran QB Chad Henne announced his retirement in February, and the Chiefs signed the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Blaine Gabbert to replace Henne as the backup QB. And now, recent reports suggest the Chiefs had talks with the former Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz to be the backup QB of Mahomes.

“Carson Wentz and the Chiefs did talk this offseason,” NFL insider Jeremy Fowler revealed in a recent episode of the ESPN show SportsCenter“There was some dialogue about Wentz potentially joining the Chiefs maybe down the road, or at least, you know, keeping that communication open.”

Furthermore, Fowler also claimed that the Kansas City-based football team liked the idea of having Wentz in their QB room behind the 2-time league MVP Patrick Mahomes.

“I was told the Chiefs were fairly receptive to that idea. Certainly, they respect the talent. And I was told Wentz is open to getting to a championship-type team, getting into a new winning culture, where he can learn, you know, sit behind a Patrick Mahomes,” said Fowler.

Now, there’s no question about Mahomes’ toughness, but he’s coming off an ankle injury, and even last season, the Chiefs needed their backup, Henne, to step up in the divisional round when Mahomes, unfortunately, got hurt. So, having a guy like Wentz in the quarterback room could certainly benefit the Chiefs in those situations.

However, having Gabbert as a third-string QB would be a luxury that the Chiefs would not like, and despite the reports, it’s possible the defending Super Bowl Champions just roll with Gabbert as their second-stringer instead of adding the free agent Wentz just days ahead of the 2023 season.

Chiefs not likely to pursue Carson Wentz claims Mike Florio

Despite the reports from the ESPN analyst Jeremy Fowler, the NBC analyst Mike Florio claims the Chiefs are looking to roll with two quarterbacks instead of adding Carson Wentz.

Florio acknowledged that the Chiefs and Wentz could’ve had talks in the past, as Fowler claimed, but he still believes that it would be too late in the season for Wentz to learn Andy Reid‘s playbook.

Therefore, it seems like Wentz will remain a free agent for now. Even in the future, it’s tough to see Wentz signing with any unless a team desperately needed a quarterback because of injuries. But as of now, Wentz’s career as the starting QB in the NFL is seemingly over.
