“It ripped my heart out,” Chiefs Travis Kelce breaks silence on ex-teammate Tyreek Hill’s controversial move to the Dolphins
Travis Kelce spoke on Tyreek Hill's exit from the Kansas City Chiefs almost 10 months after it happened.
The 2022 offseason saw one of the biggest trades in the NFL’s recent history, with Tyreek Hill moving to the Miami Dolphins. The former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver made the shocking move after failing to agree to a new contract with the Chiefs.
The Dolphins gave away five draft picks from the 2022 NFL draft to make Hill the highest-paid player in the league.
Since the trade took place, a lot has been said, especially by Tyreek Hill during his time with the Chiefs. The 28-year-old felt that he wasn’t receiving passes from quarterback Patrick Mahomes towards the end of his spell, also alleging head coach Andy Reid of playing favorites.
This time, however, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce opened up on Tyreek Hill’s exit from the franchise in March. Speaking almost 10 months after the trade happened, Kelce said that he was extremely happy for Hill, and heaped praises on the superstar wideout.

Speaking at the Pivot podcast, Kelce said, “I want to say I kind of caught wind of it before it happened. It was eye opening when it did happen because it was like, ‘Man, this can’t be real man.’ You know what I mean? That’s the guy that I called my brother and don’t get me wrong. I’m happy as hell for his success. I’m so happy because of the big decision that he did make. It didn’t just backfire on him.”
“He’s actually still going out there being the Tyreek Hill that we all know we can be. And, and you know, I can’t. I can’t say I love that guy enough because what he was for my career caught grabbing all that attention on the football field. It just it made my life so much easier. Then on top of that, he’s just a great teammate, man, great guy to have in the building.”
Travis Kelce also revealed that he was extremely sad when Hill left the franchise but also understood what made him move. He felt that a whopping 30 million dollar salary was definitely a big positive for Hill while considering a trade move to the Dolphins.
“But it definitely ripped my heart out when it did happen, man I was, I was a little down about it at first, but um, at the end of the day, man, he made a lot of money. I can sit here and say I wouldn’t do the same thing, because I’m not getting $30 million thrown at me. That was a year at least. And it’s just like you, man, you know what? I know, we got something special here. And I know we got the players and the coaches to be able to keep this thing going,” Kelce finished off on the subject.
