“Baker Mayfield is not going to Carolina as a SAVIOR”: Chris Broussard reckons the Baker-Panthers relationship is going to fail badly
Chris Broussard and Baker Mayfield
What an absolute cracker of an offseason we have had and more often than not, Cleveland Browns have found themselves at the center of all the drama. They have stayed in the news which isn’t a bad thing for an NFL franchise, however, the reasons for which the team has made the headlines aren’t going to please a lot of their admirers.
First, they made it crystal clear that they aren’t interested in giving Baker Mayfield another chance and went all in to get Deshaun Watson. After much deliberation, they were able to rope him in for a massive amount. However, the QB’s legal troubles landed them in a very tricky situation.
“He is not riding in their on a white horse”: Chris Broussard on Baker Mayfield joining the Panthers
Fans were expecting them to go back to Baker but the QB wanted out. Most recently, the Browns traded Baker to the Carolina Panthers and that too in exchange for a conditional fifth round pick. Now, if Deshaun gets suspended, Baker is not there anymore and in that case, the Browns will end up high and dry.
Without a doubt, the Browns are in a spot of bother and at the same time, many are suggesting that the Panthers, who had a disastrous last season, might finally have a good season after Baker’s addition. However, NFL analyst Chris Broussard had something different to say on First Things First.
“No, the Baker-Panthers relationship is not going to work. He might not even start,” Chris said, adding that although Baker has been a better player than Sam Darnold, he has also had better wide receivers, better running backs and better offensive line. “I think he is better but he is yet to be proven.”
“The Panthers are smart, it’s an open competition. Both of you guys come into the camp and the best man will win. That’s how they should do it and may I remind you, Sam Darnold looked really good in the first three games when he had a good running back,” Chris stated.
Chris went on to add that it won’t be as smooth for Baker as many are suggesting. “Baker’s not riding in there on a white horse, he’s not going to Carolina as the savior,” Chris said, adding that Baker will eventually get to know how it is when you go from a top 5 offensive line to a bottom 5 offensive line.
It will be interesting to see how Mayfield performs at the big stage after a disastrous last season.
