The football program at Ohio State University is one of the most respected in the entire nation. Historically, OSU has treated fans in the NFL by producing some of the most entertaining quarterbacks to play the game. Justin Fields was the latest QB out of Ohio State to make it to the NFL and he has adapted greatly to the pace of the game in the league and has fans in Chicago optimistic after a long time.
This year, OSU has produced yet another amazing quarterback in the form of C.J. Stroud, who was picked second in this year’s draft by the Houston Texans. This does not come as a surprise considering Stroud was a two-time All-American and was in contention to win the Heisman Trophy while in college.
However, his time at Ohio State was not all sunshine and rainbows. C.J. Stroud’s net worth is over $2 million and he nearly lost his starting role to a completely new recruit. During the latest iteration of The Beltway Boyz podcast, Stroud opened up about a sour memory he had while at OSU.

C.J. Stroud played with a chip on his shoulder after OSU recruited a new QB
Head Coach Ryan Day and QB Coach Corey Dennis decided to bring in quarterback Quinn Ewers in 2021 as he was a five-star recruit and one of the top candidates at his position in the country. While this was a completely strategic move by the coaching staff, Stroud was not happy with this. He felt “disrespected” that the team was considering a different QB with him on the squad.
Here’s what Stroud said, “They brought someone else in, Quinn Ewers, the Texas quarterback. He was the No.1 player I think, ever ranked out of high school They brought him in like a week into fall camp, which is training camp for us. I kind of felt disrespected. I didn’t like that.”
From that point forward, Stroud had a chip on his shoulder, he used this situation to fuel the fire within him and unsurprisingly, beat Jack Miller III, Kyle McCord, and Quinn Ewers to get the starting job at OSU. The quarterback wants to use the same incident to motivate him to succeed in the NFL. Going into the draft, Stroud had a lot of doubters, who judged him on the basis of his low S2 Cognitive test score.
The test is used to assess the decision-making skills of the athlete and Stroud got 18% while his competitor Bryce Young aced the test with 98%. The Houston Texans are expected to start Stroud in week 1 but one cannot rule out the possibility that he may have to compete for the starters role against Davis Mills. Stroud is not a stranger to such situations and will give it his all in order to prove that he deserves the job as QB1 for the Texans.
