The San Francisco 49ers fans thought they hit the jackpot when the Niners gave up a lot to move up in the 2021 NFL Draft to select Trey Lance as the 3rd overall pick. And then they really hit the jackpot when the 49ers drafted Brock Purdy as the very last pick in the 2022 draft. However, due to injury struggles for both Purdy and Lance, there’s a QB competition now in San Francisco and Sam Darnold might even end up winning it.

The rookie sensation Brock Purdy is set to miss most of the regular season due to his elbow injury per multiple reports. So the quarterback competition is mostly between Trey Lance and the former New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold. As for now, Lance has the upper hand since he already spent two years with the 49ers learning the offense. However, some experts believe Darnold might win the battle and clinch the starting QB role.

Amidst this situation, the 49ers’ insider Matt Maiocco heaps high praises for the Niners’ new addition Darnold and makes a bold claim about the 6’3″ quarterback. “Sam Darnold might be — can I say this — the most talented thrower of the football that the 49ers have ever had,” Maiocco said during a Thursday appearance on KNBR’s Murph & Mac Podcast. “I think that he hasn’t really had any chance to succeed since his college days are over. I think he’s had four head coaches in five years, five offensive coordinators in five years. He’s a talented guy.”

After losing Jimmy Garoppolo to the Las Vegas Raiders in the 2023 free agency, the San Francisco 49ers signed Sam Darnold to a one-year deal worth up to $11.5 million including incentives.

Darnold was a former first-round draft pick by the Jets who has played for 5 years in the league with the Jets and the Carolina Panthers. He is a highly talented quarterback who never had the benefit of playing behind a solid offensive line during his NFL career.

But the 49ers have one of the best offensive line units and have plenty of offensive weapons for him to spread the ball. And the Niners players seem to already like Darnold asTE George Kittle and RB Christian McCaffrey were seen hanging out with the 25-year-old quarterback.

If Trey Lance doesn’t impress the Niners in the training camp they might end up starting Sam Darnold, who is looking to redeem his career. There’s still plenty of time left but Darnold certainly has a shot at winning the QB battle with the Niners.
