The last time the San Francisco 49ers won the Super Bowl was back in 1994 when they beat the San Diego Chargers (now based in Los Angeles). Since then, they have come close to winning their sixth Vince Lombardi Trophy on occasions, but to no avail. However, Colin Cowherd believes that current 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan checks all the boxes to lead his squad to the coveted Super Bowl title.
After Chip Kelly‘s tenure as coach, Kyle Shanahan assumed the coaching position in San Francisco. The 49ers had been going through a rough patch, with three consecutive seasons without making it to the playoffs. His appointment did not make much difference in the first two years. However, in his third season, the 49ers reached the Super Bowl for the first time since 2012, narrowly losing out against the Kansas City Chiefs. Since then, the 49ers have made two additional playoff appearances.
On account of this, Colin Cowherd, on the recent episode of his show ‘The Herd’, has taken it one step forward and labeled Shanahan in the same bracket as Bill Belichick and Andy Reid. “In the NFL, what we all consider great coaches have hardware. Belichick, Mike Tomlin, Pete Carroll, Andy Reid, and Sean McVay all have hardware.”
Then Cowherd asked the important question, “Is Kyle Shanahan the last great coach in our big three (NFL, MLB, NBA) sports world not to have a ring? Yes! I would say that’s true.” Shanahan has a great opportunity to challenge for the divisional playoffs again this year if he keeps his faith on Sam Darnold according to Cowherd.
In football, winning trophies matter the most, and Cowherd argues that Kyle Shanahan is the only elite coach left in the NFL who hasn’t yet won a Super Bowl.

Colin Cowherd believes Sam Darnold will be Kyle Shanahan’s focus this time
Kyle Shanahan is the son of former Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan. He once revealed, according to the Denver Post, that he spent his entire life studying “every potential X’s and O’s play and issue possible.” He mentioned that he wanted to be approachable and able to answer any question that a player asked him. It’s not surprising that Shanahan is one of the most popular gaffers in the NFL and one of the favorites of Cowherd.
Considering that, Cowherd spoke highly of Kyle Shanahan’s ability to create a good squad even with average players. The analyst singled out new quarterback Sam Darnold as his focus player, whom he thinks can be great under Shanahan’s supervision.
Darnold’s role with the Carolina Panthers last season was primarily as a backup player, and eventually, the team decided to part ways with him. However, Cowherd holds the belief that Shanahan, as the coach, has the potential to maximize Darnold’s abilities.
“Where you land in the NFL is important,” said Colin Cowherd in the latest segment of Fox Sports Herd. “He’s never had an elite coach; he’s always been running for his life and hasn’t had many great players around him.”
Cowherd explained that Darnold is not Joe Burrow or Lamar Jackson, but Kyle Shanahan still wanted him. He is the coach who turned Jimmy Garoppolo into a superstar. The 2022 NFL Draft’s last-minute addition, Brock Purdy, played like a veteran with multiple championships to his name because of Shanahan.
