After spending the entirety of his NFL career with the Green Bay Packers, veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers decided to make a change by joining the New York Jets this offseason. Every player who joins a new franchise also needs to integrate with their fans. Rodgers has done that perfectly well by agreeing to a pay cut.
As per reports, the veteran 39-year-old reportedly took a $35 million pay cut in order to play for them. If that doesn’t show willingness and passion towards the Jets faithful, nothing will.
Rodgers’ two-year salary cap fell from the $108.7 million he was going to get with the Green Bay Packers to $75 million with the Jets. That is a decrease of $33.7 million which comes to around a 31% pay cut.
Colin Cowherd is mighty impressed with Aaron Rodgers’ decision to take a salary cut to play for the New York Jets
Leading NFL analyst Colin Cowherd was extremely impressed by Aaron Rodgers taking a pay cut and playing with the New York Jets. Speaking on his show ‘The Herd with Colin Cowherd’, he expressed his admiration for what the former Packers QB has done after joining the Jets.
Cowherd says this decision is a testimony to the fact that Aaron Rodgers has his priorities set on winning. It is something that great players like Tom Brady and Drew Bees did in the later stages of their career and now Rodgers is following suit. “That’s not a shave: that’s a brand pivot,” Cowherd said about Rodgers. “That is a realignment of your priorities. That is saying, ‘I want to win.’ [Tom] Brady did it. [Drew] Brees did it later. That is saying ‘I want to win games. I’m gonna sacrifice. I’ve made a bunch of money.’”
He said no top athlete at such a high level will be willing to give away $35 million and it goes to show that it’s extremely ‘unselfish’ and ‘thoughtful’. In the end with the money that the Jets would save, they can bring in more players. “I’ve never seen an owner give back $35 million bucks in any sport; they fight for every dollar. I think it’s incredibly thoughtful, unselfish, and frankly it does help you win more. You can get a couple more players.”
Aaron Rodgers will be receiving a $35 million roster bonus and his base salary for 2023 will be $1,838,888 while for the 2024 season, it will be $38,161,112.
