The 2021 Los Angeles Rams mortgaged their future and Jared Goff to the Detroit Lions in exchange for Matthew Stafford. The Rams signed a lot of players during the offseason and regular season to build a championship team. Thankfully, all their efforts paid off, and the Rams were crowned the 2022 World Champions as they lifted the Lombardi Trophy against the Cincinnati Bengals.
However, the following season didn’t go as great as their Super Bowl run. Quarterback Matthew Stafford suffered an injury that effectively ended his season. The Rams went 5-12 in 2022, which became an NFL record for the most losses by a Super Bowl-defending team.
The monetary budget of the star players the Rams signed also got out of hand. This led to them cutting Jalen Ramsey and Bobby Wagner, among others. The Rams currently have $13.5 million in cap space as per Spotrac and 11 total picks in the draft. The franchise will look to create another Super Bowl-winning team in the coming season, with the NFC being an easy conference to win with all the recent changes.
Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford can easily dominate the NFC West in 2023
After a disappointing season in 2022, fans started to write off the Rams. However, Colin Cowherd believes head coach Sean McVay and quarterback Matthew Stafford will make a strong comeback in a few months. “It’s a head coach-quarterback league. Quarterbacks play 60% of it, coaches play 40% of it. Brady-Belichick, Reid-Mahomes,” Cowherd said in the recent episode of ‘the Herd‘.
Cowherd added that the NFC is comparatively quite weaker in the 2023 season. The 49ers aren’t sure about who their quarterback is, the Seahawks probably won’t be able to recreate the Geno Smith magic, and the rest teams are well, you know. He then said that franchises are successful because they have “a wealthy non-meddling owner, a dominating defensive line presence, a great weapon, an offensive coach, and a star quarterback.” The LA Rams check all these boxes, so don’t write them off just yet.
“Take Reid and Mahomes out, Stafford and McVay are number two,” Cowherd said regarding the best head coach-QB duo in the NFL right now. Matthew Stafford did show a dip in production during the 9 games he started. However, there is a good chance that he will make a strong comeback in the coming season.
The NFC West is weak right now with the 49ers’ uncertainty at QB, the Seahawks being able to continue the momentum with Geno Smith, and the Cardinals under a new head coach. The Rams have the perfect opportunity to capitalize on this situation and make it to the top of the division and maybe recreate some of the magic.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Rams perform in 2023 with Stafford back at 100 percent!
