Dallas Cowboys kicker Brett Maher is going through a rough stretch of weeks. The 33-year-old kicker became the laughingstock of the league when he missed 4 consecutive points after touchdown attempts in the Cowboys’ wildcard game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And now, he has caught an unnecessary stray during the 2023 Pro Bowl games after a kicker shanked his kick attempt.
To recognize the special teams players, the league newly introduced a kick-tac-toe event in this year’s Pro Bowl. During this new game, the Seattle Seahawks kicker Jason Myers badly shanked his kick attempt, which led to commentators brutally trolling the Cowboys kicker Brett Maher. “Is that Brett Maher?” joked a commentator after Myers badly missed his target. “I’m sorry about that, how bout dem Cowboys?”
It was too soon for a brutal joke like that, but his co-commentators seemed to enjoy it. Moreover, except for that one game, Brett Maher has had a pretty decent career for a kicker so far. Maher went to school at the University of Nebraska where he made 99.0 percent of his extra point attempts and converted 78.0 percent of his field goals during his two-year-long college football career.
The Dallas Cowboys will probably release Brett Maher

Maher was first signed by the Jets in 2013 as an undrafted free agent but failed to make the team. However, the same year he played for the Dallas Cowboys for two weeks while their starting kicker was injured.
Following his brief stints with a couple of NFL teams, Maher decided to test his talents in the Canadian Football League, where he ended up playing for four years with multiple teams. He also had a brief two months stint with the Cleveland Browns during that period.
It’s only in 2018, during his second stint with the Cowboys, that he managed to get a stable place in the starting lineup. In 2018, he converted an impressive 80.6% of his field goal attempts. However, in 2019 that number dropped to 66.7% and he got cut by self-proclaimed America’s team.
And again, he got another chance with the Saints in 2021 and he once made full use of it. During that time, he converted 88.9% of his field goal, which led to him getting a third stint with the Cowboys.
During his third stint, he was having a career-best year as he managed to convert 90.6% of his field goal attempts before that awful performance at the playoffs. And now, the Cowboys might probably move on from him but in this kicker-deprived league, some team might have a place for him since he showed some promise in the regular season.
