The National Football League takes players’ safety very seriously and keeps trying to find a way to minimize the players’ injuries in the future. In that trend, the league is now reportedly trying to ban the “Hip-Drop” tackles in the future to avoid potential injuries. However, the players and the fans believe NFL might be overthinking it and is trying to fix something that doesn’t need any fixing.

According to NFL reporter Dov Kleiman, the league’s Chief Medical Officer Allen Sills wants to have an ‘“active off-season conversation” about banning the tackle. The “Hip-Drop” tackle has resulted in injuries several times. Most recently, during the divisional round game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys, one of the Cowboys running back Tony Pollard got injured as a result of the hip-drop tackle.

This particular tackle has a risk of causing an ankle or leg injury due to how the defender drops his whole body weight on the player he is trying to tackle. However, that tackle is one of the few remaining legal ways a defender can bring down the ball carrier, and taking away that from the defenders might be overkill and might give the offensive players way too much leverage.

Moreover, many veteran players around the league including the former Seattle Seahawks defensive back Richard Sherman also feel the same way about the league possibly banning the move.

The 5-time Pro Bowl cornerback Richard Sherman believes it will be an overkill to ban the hip-drop tackle maneuver. “Defense is Hard enough with the rules about roughing the QB and interference. This would be overkill,” tweeted Sherman about the possibility of banning the tackle.

Furthermore, many players agreed with Sherman’s sentiment and shared their own insights about why this decision will not be a good one. “This is so stupid. How the heck are we ever going to get guys on the ground? They thinking too much,” tweeted the Steelers DL Cam Heyward. “So dumb… they trying to make defenders extinct lol,” wrote Heyward in a separate tweet about the same issue.

Everyone, who’s watching the game or playing in it wants to make the sport less dangerous to the players involved. So if they are all collectively speaking against a particular decision, the only wise thing to do would be to listen to the players involved and then make a decision, which is what the NFL will do in this issue.
